After the RTH recovery I have decided to add a 100m steel sling to my recovery gear. In the rocky conditions nylon straps can be damaged easily as you need to lay them over rocks.

Grips,
I support your thinking, few people realize how difficult and extreme that route really was, look at these extracts from some of my videos, frozen in moments.
first the angles in reality going down,
and then extracts from the recovery videos, showing true team effort, the amount of energy and effort it took, and the difficulty.
Those that did experience it, this is a lesson to all, 1st you need a strong reliable winch, battery, ( my battery on the day took big strain), its now fully charged and still, showing green, however on the day the battery really worked. fortunately I had a back-up and thanks to Dirk and Pierre, we used the second in series.

Martin yes I again just admired the capabilities of a winch. Have one on the 79 Cruiser. Got a Warn and T-Max in my storeroom. The Warn will go on the 76 very soon. Draining a battery in a 4.5 hr recovery is about as far as a battery can go.
According to Ignus a rated shackle also break during the recovery showing the stress on components.

In the end the two winches won the day.

On the Road to Hell recovery of Martin a rated shackle broke - no drama.
It was Christopher's (Grip's son's) & it was attached to my recovery point which is strong, but thin, butting all stress on one point of the bow.

An oldish wide recovery strap also snapped, it was about 10m or 15 m long and snapped about 3m from the back of Fearless.
It smacked my back number-plate smashing a hole in it that looked like a large stone in a Catty had been fired at it.
the other part of the strap was attached to a series of straps and then to Martin's winch, so kinetic force was lost & it just fell to the ground.

A quick question regarding the above post by our fearful leader - why was the bow (and not the pin) of the shackle put through the recovery point? My humble logic says the strap in the bow end of the shackle and the pin in the vehicle's recovery point is the correct way.

I am not criticizing, but trying to learn

Sorry Thys, the pin must have been through the recovery point.
The bow wont fit through the hole.
Just checked.
So I misspoke.
I actually thought it was as I said above, but tgats not possible.

So the strap snapped the bow.
The pin was OK...

Gotcha, Malman !! Thanks for clearing that up.

That shackle must have been previously damaged, had a rating that was too low (less than the rating of the strap), or had a manufacturing defect. Ratings are only worth as much as the entity doing the rating.

Must be a manufacturing fault. The shackle was taken out of its wrapping on the day if I remember correctly

I also think that it was a rated shackle

Some way into the 4.5 hour recovery, I observed a situation where the straps caused one of the shackles to turn slightly and therefore the shackle was operating at 45 degrees to the line of the pull, I suspect this happened when the shackle broke so it was potentially an application issue more than a product issue. In other words it pulled the shackle open.
Flex is overrated
