Cleaning your recovery gear

#1

Post by Panda »

Ok so we like to get dirty and thus it is inevitable that our recovery gear will be used at some point.

So the Question that arises is how do you clean them afterwards?
there is conflicting methods form the use of pressure washers to just a bucket of water, some use soap others say no soap. some hang to dry on washing line others say no keep out of direct sunlight.

At what intervals do you clean a plasma rope?

So the question is how do you do it, if you even do?

I’d only clean one that’s been in mud, but only if it was very very dirty.

My Kinetic strap got dirty - badly, in mud one year.
Bundled in a green dustbin bag & brought it home.
I threw it in the bath, tapped some luke warm water in & then walked up & down over it.
Took 6 cycles, taking the strap out & cleaning the bath each time, before the water was - sort of - clear...

But I would try use water only - no detergents or soaps as much as possible...

Personally, I basically do what Manny does (rinse until the water is clean), then chuck it in the washing machine with no detergent

I wouldn’t put a rope in a washing machine but a strap shouldn’t be an issue.

Washing machine hand wash cycle with no detergent, that’s basically what Manny did but without the effort
Flex is overrated

You can only use the washing machine if you wear the pants!

If you want to wear the panties I guess you’ll have to do it by hand!

What does the manufacturer specify for cleaning?

They generally have guidelines/instructions (if its good kit it should)

I daisy chain ropes so that they don't tangle

When towing wood to mega-fire
on river-trip etc its handy to have
few meters of chain wound round trunk
and attach rope to its ends via small shackle/s.

Also if towing a vehicle (esp on tar)
can put rope through a 1/2m piece of PVC piping or equiv and that takes most of abrasion etc at mid-point of taut then sagging rope.
( Such PVC piping , with plug-ends ,
can also be used as a holder for
tent-poles, FishingRods or other ‘longs’ etc )

Message from these examples being
to avoid abrasion and , as far as possible,
avoid excessive rope dragging along ground
and getting ‘sanded -up’ in first place.

Otherwise rope-washing techniques etc
others recommended previously though
I would spend much of time first applying
vacuum cleaner.

Some of the specialist recovery suppliers
also repair ropes that are lightly damaged
... stitching /covering etc though obviously
with kinetic ropes etc one often cant do that.
