Winches

#1

Post by Mike Nel »

Again. Watching this Ausie program on Youtube called 4wd Action, my question arises from that.

Those okes are not afraid to use their winches. Most if not all have a winch with a plasma cable. Their favorite saying is; "rather use the winch than risking doing damage to the vehicle". I tend to agree with them.

My question is this. Are we, even if we have a winch available to proud to use it? I have seen people rather attempt a difficult section on route a few times, risking vehicle damage, than use the winch.

Your thoughts?

Not scared or to proud to use my winch, or someone else's if necessary.

Here in the Fairest Cape we do not have trees to tie a winch cable to.
We mostly have sand. And you all know that sand anchors don't work. Yes?

You need to Anchor the TJ and I suspect your winch would be too small so you might allow some smoke to escape out the winch unless you use a snatch block or two!

Also get that winch line out as far as possible so you’re on the first winding!

Now, the popcorn bit, I have five vehicles equipped with winches that gets serviced regularly, they still let me down when I need them the most!🤣

And if that wasn’t enough popcorn, why is everyone so gung ho on plasma? I can see a fray or a kink in steel and 20kg extra weight is not even making up for my boep![emoji12]

I still prefer steel, plasma is for mall crawlers and image seekers[emoji12]

hi guys,
I am witness to the value of a winch, personally I have used mine on four recoveries during my 4x4 excursions, it is a very handy tool. last year I was playing with other 4x4's at Hennops, normally a very boring trail. I went and experimented on a different line, bit stupid. Having having done Bridgestone and being set to new challenges, the ordinary did not test me anymore, hehe,
this is the result, i had to use my own winch to recover myself, anchored from two angles. Not for the faint hearted.

Mike, that 4WD show is compelled by advertising and sales targets (Shaun Whale also owns a 4x4 shop) to advertise their products.... great show but the use of the winch is also to boost sales.

PS - I tend to agree, rather safe and secure than sorry when it comes to off-roading to prevent damage or injury.

I didn’t think the truck was that stuck.
Only thing that happened is the jeep got pulled closer to the truck [emoji23]

The Pofadder got it out very easily on recovery points that xj junkie won’t be to proud off [emoji850] so used some lanyards to be sure.

Agree that the winch would most probably burn out, only a 9000.
