Electric vs Viscus fans?

#1

Post by Shane »

So I'm busy replacing my KZ with a D4D.

Space is an issue as it's in an old SFA hilux.

After reading the thread on intercoolers I am serously considering an electric fan rather than the old viscus. This should give me enough space to mount the intercooler in front as opposed to on top.

What do you think? Would this be wise or not?

Shane I have done my share of conversions. If you go electric fan buy top of the range like Syclone otherwise you will have endless overheating problems. Have three Syclones keeping Yank v8`s cool. Even towing 3t in 40deg from Upington.
V8 shops stock Syclone

On the Lexus SFA Hilux we did I moved the front crossmember forward to clear up extra space for the radiator.

Thanks Grips!

Obviously you are happy with what you put in and they are just as reliable?

First one running since 2012 in the Yank Ranger. Only problem were a failed relay switching the fan. Upgraded that and never had any hassles again

The ones in Platrangetjie and the Little Patrol flawless since around 2014

Keep electric fan in your spares box
and you can also use it in hotter parts like Richterveld esp if your aircon packs-up.

Will the fan still cool the motor if it's in the spares box.
Or should he take it out & mount in behind the radiator?

Shane, one of my dream vehicles would be to find a Toyota Hilux 2.8D D/Cab 4x4 SFA in good condition (virtually impossible) & then convert it to a D-4D with a mild power update (not too much, the brakes & handling can't handle much more).
So I wish you well on this project.

Have a look at the recent YouTube video from the Aussie 4x4 guys on brake upgrades for 4x4 bakkies. Interesting to see how the braking distance increases with all the extra goodies added to the D Max compared to a standard one.

The DC with the Lexus Christopher had, had discs with VW Golf calipers installed. The front hubs are identical to Land Cruiser. Would be easy to upgrade them to Cruiser 4 pot calipers and ventilated diff's.
The six stud Cruiser hubs to be used

Yes, that drain is high. I also cooked the relay on the 80. Then went with a Cole Hearse

Thanks Manny.

Brakes have already been upgraded. Those old spongy brakes were dodgy from day one!
