My 76 Land Cruiser Modification Thread

Those shitty BF`s were down and dusted at around 93000km. Time to fit new tyres.
Ok everyone by now know that some guys complains about the high rpm of the v8 Land Cruiser 70 Series in 5th gear at highway speeds.
Have done 70k km in the 76. The gearing at first bothered me but one sort of get used to it over time.
I have done many hours of reading and research on the subject.
Have investigated possible six speed gearbox conversions and overdrives. Also the upgraded 5th gear.
Sad I could not find a single comparison on the old vs new 5th gear swop. Some owners claimed they were better off others say they stuffed up towing ability. Not a single proper consumption test done worth mentioning. Other than I think or maybe it is around 1km per liter better.
Run many Ratio and tyre combinations on my gear ratio calculator. Have checked out tyre sizes and their effect. Coming from vehicles fitted with 35`s I know the huge gains in off road ability.
Buying new tyres I decided to do and experiment. I went for a set of 315/65/16.
Some small mods needed to be done on the mud flaps to prevent rubbing. Also the rear door spare carrier.
The results. I am happy.
The Good.
Got 6.7km/l going down to Port Nolloth towing a loaded venter trailer.
Gained 10km/h in 5th gear. In the past 120km/h were at 2700rpm. 130 at 3000 and 140 at 3300.
Now 120km/h at 2500rpm, 130 at 2700 and 140 at 3000.
Cannot say that the 315`s has influenced acceleration that much. Think the slighter longer gears help.
The bad.
Definitely little slower overtaking in 5th.
The speedo is out by 10km/h. Showing 110 when doing true 120 on the GPS.
Odometer and trip meter under reads 13km per 100km.
Will correct that once I have ordered a speedo correction module.
Some touching of fender flares under full flex. Will be sorted with a two inch lift.
Have done a quick dune run I am smiling
