Modifying a spare wheel swingarm.

#1

Post by Paul#25 »

My latest project is to make a frame/cage that can accommodate 2 plastic bottles or firewood. This must fit to a spare wheel swingarm in place of the wheel attachment fitting. The customer wants it powder coated to match the arm instead of painting it.
I've fabricated the frame from angle and flat bar. This will be covered with expanded metal and there will be a hinged flat bar strap over the top that will be lockable.

As I progress I'll update the progress and move photos.

I await Chas' comments on the welding and structural integrity...

He's more than welcome to come inspect the job.
By the way the swingarm is made from 50x75mm rectangular tube that is 4mm thick.
There is also lot's of gussets and bracing. That is how a wheel carrier should be built.

Only thing in that fridge is my cold water and juice. Beers aren't a good idea when I'm working on customer projects with dangerous tools. Far too easy for slip-up's and I get lazy after a beer or two.

Those yellow containers are used in the boating world. They are called "capsize canisters" and hold 18l of liquid. My customers wants to carry 2 of these canisters or load the basket with firewood.
The canisters are from Pioneer Plastic.

Looks like a Stofpad carrier.
Nice Mod.
One thing I hate to carry inside a vehicle is firewood.

The only problem for me is carrying that amount of weight so far off the center off the pivot point of the arm.

I have seen how much they flex off road on a D3

If it is a Stofpad setup the have a very nice supportive lock system that takes the load from the pivot point

I was there but he kept my attention on other things in the opposite side of the workshop. Only saw that fridge in a photo posted later.

Thus I can't vouch for Paul's claim
