79 Land cruiser Camper Build.

#1

Post by grips »

It all started in 2018 before the River trip. Planned to do the trip with the family and two Cruisers.
We were looking for a suitable canopy for the 79 but could not find anything to my liking.
So I decided to build my own canopy.

Started working on it around 2 months before the River Trip. Then Karin went in for an unexpected operation.
Decided to abandon the trip. The canopy build was placed on the back burner.
Karin came out of hospital a week before the trip and urged my to do the River trip.
Threw every available minute into the canopy build.
Went on the River trip with a half finished and very disorganized packed vehicle.

Burning midnight oil few Days before the River trip.

Since building the canopy in 2018 I have done several trips. This helped a lot to determine what I want and need.
On the River Trip I was jealous of how easily Andreas setup camp.
My aim with this camper build is to stop pop the rooftop and have the setup ready to camp in less than ten minutes.

Few hours before leaving for the River Trip. Canopy fitted. Still needed to fit the locks at that stage. Finished that at 4 in the morning left at 8 for Giyani.

Some Pics doing the River Trip. Note the braai wood tossed on the roof of the canopy.
One of the very first mods was to remove the first roof rack.
It trapped all sorts of stuff on top. Sand and leftover splinters from braai wood, leaves from trees and shrubs.
It had water outlets on all sides but was a mission to clean after every trip.

So the kitchen is that blink side entry box on the left.
I see the fridges right in front & the drawers.
But what is that white ?chromodek thing between the drawers & the fridges?

Also I would add a mesh or something to prevent stuff packed on top of the drawers falling onto the fridges.
If you pull a fridge out & a item falls down, you will sukkle getting to it...
