Chas, you are going to become a piggy bank for any traffic cop that see the back of your vehicle. The fine will be for each light that you are obscuring, even though they are not fully blocked by the wheel carrier.
Those hinges are not designed for an application like that and are going to wear out very quickly. If you fill them with grease, it will be grinding past after the first drive on a dirt road. You will need to look at a dry-film lubricant to apply to both pivot points like Spanjaard ADF.

I remember reading, many years ago, on the other forum about using a modified stub axle as the pivot.
IIRC Heinz Modricky from Metalian made some kits available through Henk Bannink

This is an example

... yes ... I think Heinz has installed such a Stub-Axle Swing-Arm on the back of my Mini Metalian ... and Ive taken
a few photos for those that might be thinking of installing something similar.
I think the double swing-arm spares that Land Cruiser folk
feel obliged to display on the back of their rigs are very similar if not equivalent.
An important point is that it is far easier to rigidly mount
such swing-arms if one has an accessible CHASSIS rear-cross member on which to anchor them . My Metalian does not
and my Defender 130 does not ( unlike 110s & 90s) as the 130 bin extends back 15-20cm beyond the rear cross-member ...
Heinz has installed a good firm tensioned latch to provide a second support point for the swing-arm.

I may design and have a sturdy second rear cross-member
made up for my 130 in due course & then install such a stub-axle swing-arm.

Look at the photos successively from bottom to top.

Yes Manny,
... I have noticed that my tow hitch is upside down ...

I've been in contact with Heinz and drawn his attention to this thread.
He still makes and sells these modified axles for a swingarm.
He is prepared to make drawings of the mechanism available.

Please contact him directly

You can get those used by Heinz from Burquip as well. We use them on our trailer swingarms. If I recall they go for about R700 a set.
Just keep in mind that the bearings are pre-fitted and you need to remove them in order to weld the sleave onto the arm you need to manufacture.

Unfortunately not. Basically just a bush with bearings and the receiving pin. The rest you have to manufature - easy enough though. I just used what was at hand, but a more suitable pin would be something like this.
The next trailer we build in January will have this pin, but not where it is at the moment. it will be placed on the far end, and will be kept/pushed open with a gas shock rather.
I found the pin on the bearing bush to be tedious.
