OK my first Check in on this thread
On our just finished Botswana tour we made a few pot breads
A very simple recipe
3 cups of flour
1 packet of quick raising yeast
Teaspoon of salt
Teaspoon of sugar
Small table spoon of melted flora Margarine
Est 1 cup of low heated (warm) water
Start mixing all the components and kneading till a nice texture dough
Leave for around 20 minutes to raise in a bucket or in your pot you going to bake it in
I leave the pot in the sun to get some temperature or if weather is not good next to the fire
Knead one more time to get nice air in to the dough.
Then put in pot and bake
I use Around 8-10 pieces Charcoal if available or nice coals from wood fire under the pot
And give the pot some heat from the top
Around 30-40 minutes (depending on how hot your coals are) & the bread is baked.
A very nice piece of kit to have on a Overlanding trip with limited Supplies

Flora doesn't make butter.
Are you perhaps using Margarine ?

Would it not be better to use butter rather than reconstituted plastic (Margarine)?

You can use butter or Margarine or Veg oil
But Woolies is hard to find on most rural overlanding trips
