4x4 Action Group

Hey guys and gals

I’ve been prepping for our 10 day 4000km Road Trip from Swakop to Cape Town and I’ve built extensive routes on both GAIA GPS (works with CarPlay) and T4A.

However, despite using all the same waypoints, T4A shows slightly less distance travelled compared to Gaia GPS.

So my question would be… which of the two is more reliable/accurate with track miles/times.

T4A probably uses 2-spoor dirt roads where Gaia probably avoids them.
T4A is more reliable for backroads IMHO. It sucks in cities.

Never used Gaia. I avoid all Apple products as well.

I can tell. I’ve settled on building out my route on T4A, and have imported it into my mapping system of choice.

T4A is for planning off tar stuff, not live navigation.
Gaia is for hiking, cycling, GPS coordinates, cool layers if you have the paid version. The Tooo stuff is also useful.
Google maps is for active nav driving on tar and a bit of gravel

No one app to rule them all.

I usually have 2 systems: T4A on one Garmin, and then standard Garmin maps on another. So yes, 2 x proper GPS systems. Phones are used as a backup. If we do a trip, we try and stay off tar as much as practically possible.

I find Google Maps to be pretty much useless, as the AI used for avoidances etc is stupid. Waze is better, but also a Google product and has its own limitations.

I haven't played with OpenStreetMap, but some guys swear by it. Unfortunately now that we have the pub, I don't get to travel much anymore. Pretty sad actually.
