12V Blankets

#1

Post by Disco Nic »

While I myself am happy being cold, the missus has some auto-immune issues that cause her legs to turn purple… so we are looking at getting an electric blanket for our camping setup.

Anyone have any experience with these?

I use this one. https://campandclimb.co.za/product/kamp ... ic-blanket

Usually when I use the hammock in winter. I stuff it into my sleeping bag and plug it into the Ecoflow next to me on the floor. I stay toasty all night. about 40w usage.

I like the idea. But I prefer (if available) to just use the conventional 220V ones if you perhaps have an inverter already running.

Reasons are:
-A single phase AC current on 40-60W per blanket will be approximately 0.25A compared to a DC wire running 50W @ 12V will be 4.2A. Thus having to run effectively and safely a 6mm^2 wire when using two of these units(Double Bed)

-The 'normal' 220V ones are ALOT cheaper when it comes to replacing them. As they do not like to be folded often and controllers start malfunctioning.

-Plus side is you have an inverter for any other items that need strict 220V application (chargers etc...)

Yes I know the inverter will draw about 1A DC constant, but to run 2x blankets effectively if will go without saying that your DC configuration will have to be adequate.

Having a look at cost for two blankets:

Single Phase - R280 each thus +-R600 for two
DC - R600-R1200 each thus +-R1200-2400 for two

Maybe work in an inverter for R2000 and then 2x220V blankets and you may be sitting at R2600 but have a 'free' inverter.

I was thinking about this, hence why I ask the immense knowledge pool on here. Thank you.

"What happens at the 4x4AG GTG, stays at the 4x4AG GTG" ? Always had my suspicions. Some okes are just TOO keen to go to one, maybe that's why they call it "camp"?
