Trailer paint protection against gravel

The front of my trailer is pretty square, and takes a hammering from the gravel thrown up by my car's tyres. What can I use that would protect the powder coating.

Or get aluminium tread plate cut to suit and rivet it the parts that get sandblasted

What Geoff said.

Easy enough to do it yourself.

Thin aluminum tread plate will probably give you the best protection for the longest time. If you do fit tread plate, apply sealant around the edge before you put in place with pop-rivets. This will prevent moisture getting between the two plates and causing corrosion. Shout if you want any assistance.

What sealant would you suggest Paul?

Any of the Sikaflex sealants will do. You don't want to use any silicone sealants because they can cause corrosion with the acetic acid they give off while curing.
The best would be is to put a thin coat of sealant over the whole area of the aluminum plate. This will help prevent corrosion between the two dissimilar metals. I even put sealant into holes I've drilled in steel before I install aluminum pop-rivets.

Rubber fitted the same way would be even better as the likelihood of stones ricocheting back is lessened.
You can get that 3mm rubber in rolls at Chamdor Faktry Sales in North Riding.

I used aluminum tread plate for a nose cone I built as I needed a bigger nose cone for the trailer I had.

It was built in a box shape, not a nose cone shape.

Worked like a charm as regards taking the hammering from stones.

Hi Paul, in this desolate valley I find myself living in, apart from silicone sealant I can only get my hands on general acrylic sealant - the basic sealant used in construction to fill gaps caused by bakkie builders like Manny who does not know the difference between a tape measure and a trowel - will this do? I am concerned the acrylic acid will also aid corrosion...

Willem - I'll happily collect whatever you need and ship it up over there. You can consider it as thanks for my GFYS t-shirt...

Just let me know. :D

Thank you Ian. I am first going to try and source something from Windhoek or Swakopmund before I knock on your door (which offer I will gladly accept if I can't get it sourced).

Cheers and thanks again!
