Upgrading from self manufactured trailer:

#1

Post by Martin de Jager »

Manny have always commented on my ingenious self made projects, the guys that toured the Richtersveld trip, were skeptical of whether my trailer would complete the trip. The trip went past and yes sometimes with challenges.

Launched in August 2018, now, nearly four years later, we decided it is time to upgrade.

Since December we've been considering all options, we tried the rooftop tent, it was fun , but not for us. We looked at conventional off road caravans, considered newer models, but we are not keen on Glamping. Looked at more known brands, imports, considered the prices, some outrages.

One day we looked at the Invader Quarto (4sleeper) saw one at We Buy Cars, (up to shit service), looked at Echo, heavy and expensive. Other two sleepers etc.
Then the Invader Duo was introduced to us. Again we compared, viewed and eventually settled. We went and viewed a 2019 Invader Duo at Kempton Caravans and went for it. After advertising our old trailer it was sold.

This past weekend we set off to test our new Duo, it tows like a dream , it stands equal in height of my Tuna, equal in width, its well balanced, well though out. A proper caravan, outside kitchen, hot water, drawer system, no stairs, no ladder climbing, no tent to pitch. One button lifts the roof, pull out double bed, equal width of the trailer and equal length of the trailer. Without putting out the legs, or pitching the sunshade, its stands and sleeps in minutes, literally.

Added bonus (over my old trailer), the car is now empty, in the Duo has less space for the unnecessary. You pack less, need less and relax more.
This is a proper off road caravan, rugged and more versatile. Tarra claimed 860kg, loaded just over a ton.

What you need more is time....

Nice Martin.
When I was researching quick pitch off road trailers/caravans I came across the Invader Duo.
Like them a lot.
Congratulations....

BTW - the last photo is of the OLD trailer.

Did you put the new trailer on the weigh bridge? It’s a fantastic design but it just looks heavier than 860kg TARE and I’m sure it’s more than just over a ton fully loaded?

Enjoy Martin … looks like a whole new way of camping life for you guys.
Every year or so more folk moving away from ground and roof camping to trailer tents and caravans … more comfortable and always makes the Mrs s’ far happier.
Whats also great is these things are bigger and
can be maintained fully pre-stocked and ready to go.
As such camping stock all stored together and out of
house / garage etc.
I'm sure youll enjoy many comfortable camping days ahead !

Hi Martin

With your self-build, how did you go around the whole Certification/Road-worthy/Licencing thing?
