:? I think Chris got confused.

He’s old .

Henri’s towbar is the one in the opening post

The one with the extension on was posted by paul saying it has a 3500kg rating . I pointed out that the extension is only rated for 60kg vertical load as it’s designed to carry a bike rack only .

I have one on the defender because it came with it , and it makes for good rear protection .

But it reduces the rating of the tow bar.

I think Chris, like myself, gets a bit up tight over the Kak chancy second rate juggernauts that people create with bad, substandard and dangerous towing arrangements .

They kill people . As far as I’m concerned it’s pre-meditated murder when these things let go and kill someone .
Alex you are confused with the towbar and hitch I posted. The specifications I quoted come straight from the Land Rover manual for my vehicle. I doubt they would have got it wrong in the literature supplie with the vehicle. That is the standard towbar and hitch that the vehicle left the factory with in March 2004.

I must apologize - I’ve just been back and looked, somehow when I read your post the pic attached was - or appeared to be this pic. I was actually going to be far more derisive 🤣

Some glitch in the matrix with loading possibly or just old age - I dunno !

As you say , the towbar in the pic on your post is a properly rated and manufactured 3500kg one !

We had a very nervous few moments on our way to the NKZN venue at Kosi Bay.

About 20 km from Manguzi (the last outpost before the Kosi Bay border post to Moz) i felt an unusual movement at the rear of the Paj. I slowed down and pulled off onto the verge. When I got to the rear of the Paj my heart sank out of my body. Towbar bent 45 degrees!

We were very very fortunate that the towbar did not break completely.

The rest of the story will be covered in my trip report on the KZN trip.

Who has similar stories?
That extension tube, did that came with the tow bar? Was it bought like that?

The Defenders load bearing limits/ capabilities are probably at the upper end.
These are the load stats ... note that the indicated braked trailer gross weight is 3600kg and trailer nose weight 150kg ...
Could maybe carry a Jimny in the 130s bin...

Defenders can draw up to 6500kg depending on trim and model - the qualifier is that it must be in low range for over 3500kg (and that it has correct brakes to be road legal)

I think the Puma 110 and 130 were good for the 6500kg.

TD5 90 was 3500kg, the 110 was 5100kg (subject to correct braking and being in Low Range over 3500kg)

It's why they are popular for pulling the really big boats at the coast, that and the fact that they don't make a dive for the sea like a Toyota....

I think you are referring to a photo I posted in response to a post by Chas.

The towbar I have is the one in the photo in my very first post.
It was supplied and fitted by the Mitsubishi dealership where I bought the Paj.
It is a detachable tow hitch.

My poll has revealed anything between 135 kg to 350 kg.

Fakebook at its best!

Maybe extend it on the underbody to the engine mount points
