Gustav, evening some the options last added might allow gravel road travelling, but they certainly do not qualify as proper off-road vans, and they are certainly on the expensive side, not that anything is not expensive anymore.

That Moremi Lite is close to R200k by the time you've added the braked trailer and a few extras.
I think Saxj has one that he tows with the Jimny...

Mine is the Moremi XLT. Basically a trailer with a built in roof top tent. A ladder is required to access the bed. So doesn't really qualify in this category.
The Moremi Lite has higher sides with the bed inside with a pop up roof and a rear door, more caravan like, so fits in this category.

One should make a clearer distinction between a caravan and a camping trailer. In a caravan you can stand upright and have more freedom of movement. Owning an Invader Duo, we have a bit of both, the practicality of a camper, yet more freedom of movement, more packing space, and the ability further and deeper into than most of the options given. The new Duo X offers, a bit more practicality and 17inch std wheels. Just from our experience it allows safe travelling and less loose luggage, relative ease to setup, specially now that we fitted the awning permanently attached to the roof. Invader has actually sold more than a 1000 units since launch, the Duo by far the most popular, and the company seems to be stable in growth.
Camping in the Namaqua National Park, for the first time I experienced chassis deep sea sand, my Fortunar had to dig deep to cope with the Duo on tow, but believe, sand, dust, wind, the Duo stood its ground. Two years down the line we really enjoy our choice.
