Weekend eco trails and bush camps - Who's in?

#1

Post by Mike-PS »

So Manny and Kurt get a bit peeved when I mentioned, all we do is extreme trails and F*up up our rigs. I get this awesome club does cater for overlanders, but twice a year and taking a week or two weeks off is not always convenient in this day and age.

SO I did some research on what trails would be suitable for a weekend away that has a mix of some 4x4 and for those who enjoy the tranquility in a more isolated and natural environment . Note, I'm not professing that this is an exhaustive list or that I have much experience in this, but would be good to gauge the interest of the members who would like to break away for a weekend every now and then?

Trail / Resort - Location
Heidelberg 4×4 - Lammergeyer Farm
https://www.4x4kungwini.co.za/ - Vlakfontein 523, JR, Bronkhorstspruit
Grootwater 4x4 - About 50 Km from Ellisra(Lephalale)
SANDWANI ADVENTURE 4X4 TRAIL - 15km from Cullinan
https://www.bergenrivier.co.za/index.html - 40km NE of Witbank and Bronkhorstspruit
Serendipity Eco Trails - Tierkloof farm, Mookgophong
Berakah 4x4 - Parys
Rhino Park Adventures - Rayton, 11 km / Pretoria 35 km
Piesangkloof 4×4 Trails
B'sorah (4x4 Safari Bush Camp) - Lat -25.845954 Long 27.777850
Mabalingwe (4x4 campsites) - Waterberg Estate

I would also love something more over a weekend. I once drove all the way out to Sani, spent the night at the top and drove back to Joberg the next morning just so a mate could see it before flying back to the states. I wish there was something like that a bit closer or maybe I just don't know about it. We should continue to add to the list of things to do near Jozi with a 4x4 that is a fun and scenic trip for the family and friends.

Thanks for starting this thread Mike. I've been looking at some venue's for long weekend getaways this last week. The type of venue I was looking for was towards game / wildlife area's within 2 to 3 hours from Jo-burg where there are areas that standard car's can't get to. There are a few threads on different forums that have list's of places that fit this profile with nice info and recommendations.
I'd be very interested in doing this type of trip with guys from the group.

There are some lekker places in and around Dinokeng. It will depend on whether the group is all camping or needing other accommodation. There are unfenced camps there too for those that need that rush.

Cheers Paul and Co. wildlife is an absolute passion of mine - I’ve actually done my FAGASA training but my time is so limited due to work and travel - hence my desire to get out there whenever possible with like minded individuals such as yourselves , even if just every few months - if there is wild life, then even better ?

Sounds lekker, I do enjoy camping, also if there is something for the kiddies (pool / play ground) that would be great

Never knew they had wild camping - very interesting - I suppose not as intense as Bots but sounds very intriguing

Sondela is also good and Mabalingwe has a decent drive up to the cellphone tower.

Some of the places have bush type camps that are ideal for small groups. I've got the info on my computer at work so I'll get a list together next week when I have time. Have a look at the thread on the OTHER forum about camping places close to Jo-burg and Pretoria. I think it's at the start of the camping section. Lots of guys have given good input.

I suggest Afri sun camping and 4x4 near Mooi nooi
Buffelspoort
Very nice Bottom of the Mountain camp site
Solar power pools and kids friendly
Then
A very nice Bobejaan camp up in the Mountain
No power
No water
Ablution facility
I’ll get info from Johan the Owner then we organize a weekend away

Mike, we have done many of these, over 2 or 3 days. The most recent was DiBus Stop near Clarens.

But I get what you want (even though you did not spit it out):
* Within 3 hours of JHB/PTA
* Must have great camping.
* Wildlife will be preferred.
* Must include a light trail or overland route.

Problem is, there are not that many places....
