Loch Maree

Now this place is to be visited.

It is located about 50km west of Askham on the Red Dune Route. It is a working farm with a large salt pan and has a very nice dune route that you can drive while there.

We camped at the Bush camp and because we were a group we had the use of the house located there as well which made the stay over more comfortable as far as meal preparation etc was concerned. The owners even brought us some freshly baked bread on our first night,

The campsites are dotted around the house. There are also some chalets which looked very nice. I think that in season this camp is used as a hunting lodge.

Ablutions are very good with plenty hot water and enough showers and toilets to accommodate a large group.

The dune route on the farm is an interesting, scenic drive through the farm with some challenging sections but nothing too serious. The views of the salt pan from the last big dune is quite spectacular..

Definitely a worthwhile stay over if you are in the area.

That's why a big petrol engine is such a terrible idea.
It restricts you two a few suburbs near where you live.

A diesel would set you free to explore our beautiful country....

MalMan, I would not be in a position to explore the country in a diesel vehicle - I do not have enough annual leave and sleeping over twice on the way to my destination would cost more than the extra fuel used by my gas guzzler. :) :D

Oh and by the way - I have been to Loch Maree often - that is where I learnt to drive in sand as a 10 y/o that could hardly see over the steering wheel of the 2WD Ford F250.

Mike. Just check if you can book at the Boswell Camp. The other site that they offer looks very basic without much shade.
