Definitely not the Free State.
We camped at Waschbank over the June 16 long weekend - it dropped as low as - 7 in the early hours...
Damn that was cold...
North west area stays a bit warmer, and Limpopo side also not bad winter camping. Dinokeng does not get that cold...
But I find most of SA is fine for winter camping, now don't kill me, but at night, if you have an inverter setup. Electric blankets only draw up to 50W of power, enjoy the day camping. Have a nice evening braai and then climb into a warm bed. Leave it on the whole night even if you want. Makes life much more comfortable...
Stay away from Free State and Northern cape region...
It's all relative...

We also used electric blankets in winter but then you have a condensation issue. And unfortunately we are not Porras who have multiple layers of hair to keep us warm.
So we've decided to pack up the Bushlapa for the winter and wait for the warmer summer days to go camping again. If we need to get away during winter, we will just chalet where we could make it warm and cozy
