December trip

#1

Post by Shane »

Morning gents,

I might get to take a week off in december and would really like to get away a bit.

However it's silly season and I really HATE crowds! So the coast is generally out.

So I'm looking at a short overlanding trip - within our borders.

Now I have to be at my BIL's on the 18th and he farms just outside of Orania - so that would be the starting point.

Considering the time of year, temperatures and that I'll be travelling with a full vehicle (2 adults,3kids) - what would you recommend?

Or more importantly - where?

I have an offroad trailer and a fairly kitted vehicle.
However I would prefer not to tow if I can get away without the trailer.

I wanted to do the passes earier this year - but it didn't pan out - so still an option.

Any other ideas?

I have done NO homework on this yet and will consult my Travel guide books tonight. Just thought I'd hear from those in the know.

You are setting a very difficult task for yourself. Travelling for a week from the 18th December is peak time everywhere in SA so crowds are going to be difficult to avoid. Most places inland you are going to be a bit warm for camping. Your suggestion to do a few passes around Eastern Free State and southern KZN is not a bad idea. Maybe look at some of the more remote off-grid spots on the West Coast. Can get warm there but at least you get the cool breeze from the ocean.

… the route from Orania to Zastron and the passes follows the Orange so there must be some good camping
along there.
When I did the Passes we rendezvoused the night before in Zastron and a big down Orange River Rafting company group was too , if you into that !

Thanks guys, will certainly look into that.

Not the time of the year I prefer but if I don't slip it in I lose out!

Best weather in SA over December is in Gauteng. So, for good weather head to somewhere near here...

Eish Manne. Don’t want to burst anyone’s bubble but Sangria is Spanish. No ways the Italians would put fruit and soda and stuff into their wine.
