My Disco 2 Td5 Auto gearbox problems.

#1

Post by Paul#25 »

As most of you will know from the YEF thread, my Disco's auto gearbox gave up the ghost on our way home. After the guys from ZF kindly did some diagnostics they gave me the good news that all the electronic side of the gearbox was all good. The oil was full of clutch friction material and smelt burnt. The next good news from them was that the box would need an overhaul which would be expensive. I called around to the gearbox experts and specialist companies who all gave me the price for an overhaul starting at R40k+. With prices like that I could probably import a gearbox from the UK cheaper than have my one repaired locally.
Then along came Peter Street from Overland Worx who had been highly recommended by a few of the guys here. He gave me the assurance that he will be able to repair the Disco for a lot less than the telephone number prices I had been quoted. He would have to fit me in as soon as possible as the workshop was fully booked in the lead up to the festive season. Peter gave me a call this evening to let me know they will collect the Disco tomorrow to start the repair process. Now that is service. Thanks Peter.

I would look at putting a ‘Pre-Loved’ Manual box in the vehicle at this stage ...

... saw example of identical case about 3 months ago ...

Converting to manual would be my last option Chas. It will mean changing far too much of the cars electronics as well as changing the physical gearbox, never mind having to change the pedal configuration as well.
Once Peter and his magicians at Overland Worx have waved their magic wands over my Disco the gearbox should give at least another 250000km trouble free traveling.

Why on earth would I want to do that Chas?
Then everybody will see that I can't actually drive off-road within the first meters of an outing. :P

Chas, sorry to derail your abuse of our esteemed Chairman but....

I received a WhatsApp message from Peter telling me my Disco had arrive safely at the workshop with this photo I have attached.
The first step back to happiness.

You'd be surprised at how good I am at cheering others on while they are stuffing up their vehicles doing silly things....
I've even been known to take photos of such situations......
