Dunes??
Dunes kills Jimny`s. I have seen Jimny`s in action on many dune trips they lack power and torque. At Waterford a stock Jimny won`t get on top of 50% of the dunes.

Dune competition finals Whoooopa 2017. The Jimny was not in the competition fell out earlier. The owner wanted to make a statement during the finals. Look at his runup. This one with a 1800cc engine mod and lockers. He could not make it to the top with several runs.

Being solid axles front and rear you really can’t look past the new Jimny. Except for the complete lack of a boot or decent engine power, it must be the nearest competitor (on paper).
I'll wager that the Wrangler will kick the Jimny in the teeth when it comes to power and torque on any obstacle. It will always have the edge on any 4x4 trail. Rather compare the jimny to that Fiat Renegade.

Manny summed it up about right.

If you had to choose a vehicle in the Jeep category, buy the Everest/MUX/Fortuner. Better value for money.
Power and Torque mean bugger all off-road, except in the dunes - What counts off-road is tyre size, and that is where the Jeep has the advantage, kits are readily available to lift it to be able to fit stupidly big tyres.

In stock form the Jimny will run circles around a stock Wrangler. You are joking about Jimny vs Renegade, I hope.
@Reenen, besides dunes

I'm with SAXJ here... on 99% of trails (not dunes) a Jimny will go where a Rubi goes.

I have, with my own eyes, seen Flipside and Victor (SAXJ) do it... many times.

But on obstacles like Koos se Klim the Jimny is at a slight disadvantage.

Remember it's about the power and torque to weight ratios in low range....

And what do you need to rotate bigger tyres forward? More power and torque.

I am sorry, but we can go around and around...

Lets agree to disagree?
Lower gears

:D Show me an obstacle where I need power and torque to get up it, and then when my Jimny can't get up it, then I will concede defeat.
Lower gears multiply power and torque ........................... :roll:

That video of Flip ripping his diff apart proves the point I tried to make earlier - momentum is the key - with insufficient torque you need speed to maintain momentum and speed breaks things. That diff called a halt because of the wheels losing and gaining traction due to the bouncing caused by SPEED !!!

I rest my case ;)

Koos se Klim is one of those exceptional obstacles, that without some sort of traction aid, it is exceptionally difficult to conquer. The cross axle is severe enough at that angle that even the most modified of vehicles lifts a wheel.
A conventional bakkie with rear diff-lock quite happily goes up with the correct amount of momentum.
An open diff vehicle has a seriously hard time, and as Flip found, because of the angle, it is very difficult to pick up enough speed (momentum) to get over the cross axle, and as Thys points out, the speed comes with other issues too.
You can have all the torque in the world, but if you don't have traction....

The main difference between a guy with a Jimny and a guy with a modded wrangler on a trail is that the guy with the Jimny is having more fun.

I must say that the new one takes away some of that fun, so I try to drive it so that the TC doesn't kick in.

@Saxj

Bud if you willing to get a stock Jimny I’ll arrange a stock standard Jeep Wrangler and we do Barakah together.

Berakah is no challenge. A stock Jimny does it with ease. How about something more challenging, like The Gorge?

Keep in mind we are using stock standard 4x4’s as if they rolled off the floor, we don’t want to destroy them. Barakah has a few obstacles we can do in reverse.

Actually most places will work even easy stuff like Hobby park and Hennops. We can always take a more difficult line.

The reason I suggested The Gorge is there are some nice challenging obstacles, but they are mostly soil, so little chance of doing damage. The rocky river bed section is optional.
