... now this would , at this stage ,
probly be my choice of the range,
if I was in the market for a newby.
(... comes in at about 1/2 the price of a LC200,
maybe 1/3 ? of a LC300 ?
... What would I do with all
that saved cash ? )

Chas, you don't strike me as a "new Defender" type of guy.

In fact, I would wager 10 of the Queen's best pounds that your preference is somewhere between a Scorpio and a Poer.

If , in its simplest form, as in my last note,
the New Defender, performs adequately
& survives the test of time...
I will perhaps look at it in a few years time.

The Land Cruiser300 will start off at about R1.8 million.
So you are saying this 'Hard Top' (read 'slightly stripped down'), incorrectly named, Defender will sell for between R600 to R900k?
You live in a dream world Chas.

Currently, the cheapest Defender, drive away, is R1.2 million.
The cheapest Land Rover product is nearly R900k.
Remember, it's impossible to buy any Land Rover without ticking a few necessary options.

Prepare to pay at least R1.1 million for the misnamed 'Hard Top' Chas....

In the article:

" The 90 starts from £36,896 and the 110 from £43,771, both before VAT. Add the VAT back in and they cost the roughly the same as a normal Defender. "

I think LC 300 will be about £90000 in UK
when its sold there, not sure what landed prices
will be in SA ... import duty here is about 30-40%
and then theres shipping etc ...

...,you can double the £ numbers
then multiply by 10 to get rough Rand est

Do you pay VAT on a commercial ?

PS I cant find firm price for LC300 in SA
but recent Bus Day article says:

" The current Land Cruiser 200 is available in SA in two models: the 4.5D-4D V8 GX-R priced at R1,152,700 and the more comprehensively equipped 4.5D-4D V8 V-XR (R1,606,600).

Toyota SA expects the new Land Cruiser 300 to arrive here in August or September, with prices and specifications to be confirmed closer to the time. "

I think, when the LC300 arrives , there will be millions
of SA Toyotaholics waiting in queues ( John Deer stickers & Brandywyn in hand ...) so the price will probly be higher
... not so for the HardTop so it might be a good incentive one ... in the early days anyway ...

Chas, the guy says the Hard Top 90/110 is only cheaper than the base 90/110 to the tune of the VAT because you can claim.the 21% VAT (in the UK) back.
In other words the 90 or 110 Hard Top costs the same as base 90 or 110.
It's just the ability to claim VAT that is different...

So, R1.2 million for the Land Rover Defender 90 Hard Top.
If it comes to SA.
But it won't...

Manny, the new Cruiser 300, baseline will start at R1.9 mil.

Thanks Martin.
So, even at R1.9bar, Chas' 33% to 50% of the LC300 price is still way off.
It will only be 33% less than the magnificent, loaded, luxurious LC300.

I'd rather buy the LC76 SW for R850k than a Defender 90 Hard Top at R1.1million (Not that it will be possible).

I’d rather buy a DC Dacia, an Uno Turbo and a P-Series than a Defender. After the flaws pointed out on youtube videos, I dislike it even more

So I have now seen 4 reviews of the Defender 110 3lt Diesel vs the Landcruiser 200VX-R and all of them said the Defender was far better in every way but they would still buy the Toyota because of perceived reliability. (And yet more cruisers have broken down and recalls than the new Defender). Time will tell.

Please share the stats and where they got it from, I will gladly bow my head in shame if the new defender (like one year since its launch) has better reliability and less recalls than the cruiser 200. Also, the new defender is how old? And the cruiser 200? Is there a link between age and recalls since both were launched?
