Duster - taking things up a notch

When it comes to small cc 4WDs I’ve always believed they should be diesel. Especially if they don’t have low range. The reason being that small petrols just don’t make much torque at lower rpm, so they tend to run out of ideas when the terrain gets steep or rough.
But now Renault are changing the game with their new generation direct injection turbo petrol engine, co-developed with Daimler.
This new 1300 petrol engine makes the power of a 1.8, the torque of a 2.0 & the fuel economy of a 1.6!
For comparison, my Duster 1.5 turbo diesel makes 80 kw & 240 Nm.
But this new 1.3 petrol engine makes 112 kw & 250 Nm, which is very impressive.
That’s a lot of power in a vehicle weighing 1250 kg.
The new engine makes higher torque at low rpm (from 1500 rpm), plus higher, more consistent torque at higher revs and lower fuel consumption.
The new TCe engine has a cylinder coating used for the Nissan GT-R engine to improve energy efficiency by reducing friction and optimising heat.
Other aspects such as direct injection has fuel pressure increased to 250 bar and a special combustion chamber design to optimise the air-fuel mixture.
It also has Double cam-phasing Variable Valve Timing (VVT) for higher torque at low revs.
These engines aren’t available in our South Africa Dusters yet but Dacia already have them on sale in the UK.

That's impressive and shows the advantages of Forced Induction.
The RAV4 2.0 GX-R AWD produces 127kW but only & 203Nm & weighs 1620kg

I see that Renault have this same motor in some of their other vehicles with either less or a bit more output, namely 120 kw.

The new technology engines are really doing well on the power front, I always worry about longevity in 5 or if we're lucky 10 years down the line, and when things go wrong, they generally go expensive wrong, but the EU are getting decent power out of small engines

This is why it’s important to buy Renault, because their warranties make it their problem if something goes bust.

Many manufacturers offer longer warranties, it just fills dealer workshops for longer, and if you read the fine print, every year that passes, less and less is actually covered.

It’s worked for me, even with the fine print. But things like the engine & gearbox are covered for 5 years or 150kkm.

Can confirm.
Got a new engine at 65kkm. No questions asked. No issues raised.

Those figures mean nothing without the reduction ratios!

Duster doesn’t have low range as such, just a low 1st, like an Amarok
