Toyota FT-4X

#1

Post by XJ Junkie »

This concept first appeared around 2017 I think. But now reports suggest that there’s a good chance that they’ve decided to build it.

From what I’ve read, it’s not a FJ replacement but rather a 4WD version of the smaller CHR, which is also smaller than a RAV. Yet I’ve also read that it could compete with the Wrangler. So is this FT-4X perhaps a direct competitor to the Jimny? Although the suspension will be independent & engines will be 4 cyl.

What is really intriguing are some of the features which were listed on the concept. Some of these are pretty nifty, like for example:

- a vertical picture window on the driver’s side of the vehicle. This window is removable and owes its inspiration to the windows fitted to the old Toyota pickup Xtracab models and the original Toyota 4Runner.

- a GoPro camera mounted within the driver’s-side mirror, roof-mounted power outlets, and a special bi-mode hatch. I don’t know what bi-mode is but I suspect it’s something they’ve copied off the Wrangler.

- tailgate can swing down or out, the FT-4X’s rear hatch is able to swing up in one piece like a conventional hatchback, or it can mimic a Mini Cooper Clubman and open outward like a pair of barn doors. So a tailgate that swings both ways is surely another feature influenced by Wrangler owners.

ImageImageImage

- water bottles are built into the front and rear doors
ImageImage

- a ceiling-mounted light in the rear that can be removed and used as a flashlight,
Image

- a front dome light that also serves as an exterior beacon,
Image

- a sleeping bag that stores in the center console to become a central armrest when not being slept in.
Image

- a removable audio system
Image

- a glove box surrounded by rotating air vents that can warm up, cool down, or dry off items such as gloves or other clothing. Image

- Navigation functions are handled via the owner’s mobile phone, which slides into a socket atop the digital gauge cluster.Image

Those features are unique & clever.

I like this car & really hope that they do build it. Even though all the Toyota’s that I like never sell.

Looks like the new defender should .

I’d imagine that by the time it reaches production it will have psssed through the Toyota ‘bore it down’ program and have lost the best bits, and be strapped onto a 30 year old floor pan with corolla mechanicals ...

Apoc - Madza might be involved so that’s good news. So it may retain some fanfare.

It doesn’t appear that they have a FJ successor in the pipeline which is a pity.

FT means Future Toyota.
So anything starting with FT is a concept.

The FT-86 G - was launched, we know it as the 86 sports car.
The FT-CH was also launched, known as the C-HR
The FT-1 Concept, we know it as the Supra

The FT-4X is based on the Toyota New Global Architecture Platform (TNGA), this platform underpins the new Corolla Hatch, the new RAV4, the new Prius & the Lexus UX.

It also gets expanded as TNGA-C & is used on the new Camry (Lexus EX) etc.

So the FT-4X will be about the size of a RAV.

When it was first revealed in April 2017 many thought it woud be an FJ replacement. It is not...

Must admit, I do like the direction Toyota is heading lately.

That FT-4X is so ugly, its actually pretty.
