Took a long weekend and travelled to Clarens. Did around 1,000kms in total, there and back and wandering around. This included a couple of hundred kms on good gravel (took some back roads).
Overall consumption was 8l/100km - 2.0 bitdi VW transporter (i.e. brick), loaded with 3 adults and light luggage (Trish's definition of light anyway). Used 4x4 (AWD actually) for gravel sections.
VW Bus fuel consumption - pleasant surprise

Was that based on the legendary VW Overeading Odometer.?
When a VW bus says it did 1000km it's probably closer to 920km....

I've got bigger than standard wheels, which make it over or under read...too tired / lazy to work it out. The speedo reads relatively accurately when compared to a GPS (and incidentally, a speed cop's radar gun...ask me how).

The last VW bus test I read in Car Magazine a few years ago the Speedo and Odo were wildly inaccurate....

That is about what a Volla Bus do. The one that Karin owned some time back did between 10 and 12,5 km/l depending on speed and environment.
Manny the newer Kombi`s speedo`s are pretty accurate.

Most vehicles I've owned have been inaccurate. Usually a 5% deviation which implies 95km/h at an indicated 100 on the speedo.
Not sure why they do that: legal issues? I assume some Karen would sue the manufacturer for having a speedo that allows them to break the law unintentionally?

My recent trip down to Kzn with my 4MOTION setting speedo cruise on 126km/h
Used the brake 3 times only to stop at first 3 toll gates
Gave me a Avon 12.5Km/l and driving around Oribi Gorge and kzn average 10.5km/l
Same engine as Erin
