I'm busy planning a retirement bakkie. Any negatives regarding the last Nissan Patrol pickup?

Patrols are very tough and nice 4x4`s.

The Pro`s.
1. Reasonable priced.
2. Very Reliable.
3. Strong running gear.
4. Comfortable ride for a SFA 4x4.
5. 4.2 TD engine good for 1 mil km if looked after.

The Con`s
1. Most of the 4.2 Patrol bakkies are around 20 plus years old.
2. Nissan agents does not stock most of the critical parts. I know there is a very good support network within the Patrol community.
Sad side is spares are not available immediately. I am aware of Patrols stranded for some time before being sorted out.
3. The 4.2 engine is a pre-chamber indirect injected turbo diesel best to be left in stock trim. I have yet to hear about a modified 4.2 that can operate under full power for extended periods before EGT pulls the plug.
4. Aftermarket accessories is expensive due to the low volume of Patrol pickups sold in SA. Most of the nice stuff needs to be imported.

But I guess a good sample will still give many years of good service.
You will never find me without Stroh or a 4x4 :D

Jake's, I'll tell you what I tell anyone who wants to buy a Nissan, Land Rover or Ford 4x4:

Rather have an extra marital affair:
It costs less.
Is more fun.
Will last longer.
Is less embarrassing &
at least your friends will still respect you...

Have you considered a 2nd hand Pajero or Amarok?

The 4.2 was prone to overheating when towing as well as some developing chassis cracks

I have considered a lot of second hand products:

- Mitsu Triton, Nissan NP300 YD25 and Isuzu are attractive options but too weak for farm use
- Amarok not a real 4x4 and overpriced
- Nissan Navara is shyte
- Toyota Lux.......<spit>
- LC79: WAY overpriced and in my price bracket, been pulled through some Freestate farmers bum
