How do you do a bearing check on sealed bearing units ? Asking for a friend :lol:

I think Jake's means; jack up and wikkle the wheel top and bottom and then left right and check for movement.

Or just replace them every 80000km regardless....

Best is to replace. But diff bearings on a no floating diff seldom fails. I won`t touch them if there is not a problem.

Jack the vehicle up. Place hands at 9 and 3 0'clock. Push in and pull back and see for play.
Place both hands at 12 0'clok and pull/push to see for any play
Repeat step 2 at 3, 6 and 9 0'clock on wheels.
Or this is how we used to do it on the Isuzu's 8-)

Not sure if our friends at Toyota do the above, or if the stand and look at the wheel and say "Yes we checked it"

Forgot to mention that the DPF was replaced about 2,000km ago under the campaign.

Probably the one thing I dislike most on modern diesels. But luckily a new one so should be okay for a while

Very easy to confuse suspension play with bearing play with the 12 , 6 0`clock method

I had a humming sound on a Ford Ranger which I suspected were a wheel front bearing. No play. Even turning the wheel nothing could be felt.
In the end after replacing both left and right I found the right bearing pitted but with zero play.
Best to replace at intervals as indicated by manufacturer.

So it seems like my local Toyota dealership here in Brisbane doesn't want me to make my Fortuner a high mileager.

When it went in for it's 120,000km service the service advisor asked if they could do a valuation on my vehicle. I agreed not really sure what I'm going to do with that info.

Few hours later I received the following email about my vehicles value, future service costs compared to a new vehicle, as well as a rough calculation on what my monthly payment will be.

Yes indeed suckered me into thinking in that direction... Just for a moment.

I must admit though, I really like my Fortuner, so cannot justify new debt just because Toyota employs some really clever staff.

Will probably go through this exercise again at the next service, when the new Prado is on the floor.

But for now, the Fortuner is going nowhere
