New 2024 Prado

#1

Post by Mad Manny »

I watched a few YouTube channels discussing the upcoming Prado.
The last One was by TFL Offroad (The Fast Lane).

Either none of there guys understand how Toyota does things, or, they do, but are incapable of explaining it in a way anyone cpuld follow.

So let me try...

Firstly, Lexus, Lexus (which stands for Luxury EXport to the US)...
Does Two things:
1. It makes models that are LEXUS only.
It takes Toyota models, pimps them & sells them under the Lexus banner.

For Example, you got the Land Cruiser 200, the 'Lexus-adised' model was called the Lexus LX500
The Lexus NX, is largely a RAV4.

Now, in the US, they used to get the Land Cruiser 200, as well as the Lexus LX500.
They also had the Sequoia, which was basically a bigger LC200.

Because the Lexus was priced so high in the US,it sold poorly, but the Lexus LX & Sequoia did better.
So, Toyota USA decided that the Land Cruiser 300 would ONLY be sold as the Lexus LX600 there.
They get a new Sequia based on the LC300 too.
But the yanks are bitter that they don't get the 300.

Right, on to the Prado...

In the US they never got the Prado, they got a Lexus-adised version called the Lexus GX460 (460 because it had a 4.6 V8 motor).

Toyota has now launched a 2024 Lexus GX

Obviously, this new 2024 Lexus GX will be 'De - Lexus-adised & become the new Prado.
The Lexus GX (& Prado) runs on the same TNGA-F platform as the LC 300.

This means that the following Toyota vehicles run on the same Platform:
The Lexus LS500 Sedan
The big Sequoia SUV
The LC 300 & the Lexus LX
The Tundra truck.
The Lexus GX & Prado.
The Tacoma (& therefore the next Hilux).

So if the Lexus GX has the same floorpan (& engines) as the LC300/Lexus LX, what will differentiate them?

Well, the GX/Prado will be 94mm shorter, as the floorpan is the same it means the GX/Prado will have shorter overhangs.
In fact, it "looks like" the GX/Prado will be more off-road focused.

Also, whilst the top Prado's will be offered with the same LC300 motors (V6 3.5 turbo Petrol & V6 3.3 Twin Turbo diesel), it "looks like" they will only get an 8 speed auto as opposed to the 10 speed in the LS. 300, LX, Tundra etc.

The other difference, the lower models of the Prado will "probably" get the 2.4 Turbo Petrol (180kW & around 400Nm) & the 2.8GD with 150kW or maybe 165kW.
These, will probably be coupled to 8 speed auto boxes.

There will obviously be Hybrid offerings, but only in the upper models - but I don't care about that.

As the LC300 starts at over R1.6 million & the top Fortuners are touching R1million, I assume the Prado will slot into the R1 mil;lion to R1.6million gap.

Finally, the NEW Everest has consistently been compared to the current Prado (150) & in every comparison, the Everest has been adjudged as being better.
Which it probably is.
The new Prado will put an end to that.

Well. The last model didn't get the Fortuner engine upgrade originally. 😉 Even though it was promised. I do like the looks of the Lexusssss though.

Landrover makes much better off road vehicles than Toyota. They were just not reliable for a while so even then they were off the road.

I don’t know…

I watched the Aussies do a big SUV Off-Road and towing test… the Defender made the Toyotas look old. 🤣

The Lexus is the better looking one. For some reason with the Prado I always felt that it had the wrong engines. Looking forward to see them with proper engines.
You will never find me without Stroh or a 4x4 :D
