2024 Tacoma vs 2024 Hilux

So the 2024 Tacoma was launched recently.
Why the Yanks call a vehicle launched in the 1st half of the year, next years model, escapes me.
But then this is a country that has a mass shooting, on average, every 14 days.

Here''s one of many articles covering it:

I actually saw a Thread about it on the "Anythingbutt4x4Forum.cum" Where the guys replying clearly know F-All about Trucks.
Worrying since it was originally supposed to be a 4x4 Forum.

Then I saw a Thread on the MyBroadBand Forum. This is largely an IT type Forum for Geeks & Nerds.
Yet there the replies were far more enlightened & informed.

Makes you think, don't it. :?:

Anyhoo, I thought I'd raise a few points:
1. The US used to get the Hilux, then decided they needed their own mid-sized bakkie as they were going in a different direction.
In the 1st 'Back to the Future' Film,Marty McFly has a SFA EFI Hilux.
2. The Tacoma has NEVER been much bigger than a Hilux. A bit, but not much.
On the lesser Forum a guy claimed the Tacoma slots in between the Hilux & Tundra - total rubbish.
3. Those few Americans who have come across the current Hilux (usually in Oz) wish they got it in Shooterville - especially the 150kW 2.8GD-6
4. There are strong rumours that the next Hilux & Tacoma will be based on the same underpinnings.
So I'm not sure if our next Hilux (due in a year or so) will be based on this new Tacoma (I think it will) or if they were referring to the one after this.

If our Hilux moves a little up in size to the Tacoma size then there will definitely be space below the Hilux/Tacoma for a smaller Pick Up.

Exciting times...

Also looking forward to see what Toyota comes up with with regards to the new Hilux (and Fortuner). Herd rumors of the LC 79 etc coming with an Auto gearbox paired to the 2.8 GD6 (have not seen any dates).

Power and Torque wise that makes sense...

Power delivery wise... wtf are they thinking?

Explain why you say this? Do you think the latest auto boxes are crap?

Wasn't speaking about the autobox. Speaking about how the V8 and the 4-Banger deliver their power... That V8 was a nice shove through the entire rev range... the 2.8 feels pap below 1800 and above 3500.

Aisin and ZF build great autoboxes

The 2.8GD-6 LC79 will compete with something like the Ineos (yes, one is an SUV, the other a Bakkie), I haven't heard anyone complaining about the BMW 3.0d in the Ineos being pap....

The V8 has been discontinued due to the EU Nazi emissions rules and the move to smaller, more efficient ICE systems. But essentially I agree.

As for the BMW M57 that Manny alluded to: what a beast of an engine and it is strange that Toyota hasn't pursued a straight 6 turbo diesel, considering the demise of the highly successful 1HD-FTE.

Now you are comparing apples with a Sachertorte.

That BMW engine is probably the best engine on the market right now.

Like what Mazda did with its new 3.3l Diesel? Go read up on that, it’s proving to be a sublime engine.

I think Toyota is falling into the down sizing trap and the EV bollocks… no need to RnD a big expensive smelly diesel that’ll make Greta unhappy.

The V8 D-4D is NOT being discontinued.

If you want to compare engines (& not the entire package) the Toyota V6 3.3 Diesel beats the straight 6 BMW motor & the Mazda3.3 like a Wrangler owner beats his Ranger Driving boyfriend's butt.

I see the 'upper' Tacomas have Discs on all corners & rear coils.

“Beats” in what sense?
