Tata Xenon DiCOR needs some tuning

#1

Post by jakeslouw »

So the old DiCOR runs well, can't complain about anything (except the unladen ride but it is a workhorse 1 tonner with some heavy rear leafs.......)

But it is a little slow. 85kW and 300Nm out of a 3.0L CRDi is a little pathetic. Especially as the gearing is set for 215/75-16 high load tyres and I'm running 245/70-16 ATs. I can't get past 145km/h on a flat road in 5th, she runs out of breath.

Anemic comes to mind.

Now there are a few people that offer piggyback plug&play ECU chips (RaceChip, Eurospeed), but I don't trust them.
They advertise around 100kw & 370nm, which seems reasonable for the engine, but I'm nervous.

I've emailed 11 Degree Tuning and a few other people but no luck on remapping yet.

Anybody have any ideas or contacts? And please don't say SAC........

After a certain specialist Off Road Insurer, SAC is the last company I'd refer a 4x4'er too...

Jakes, I know very little about the Xenon (the Telcoline was based on the Colt), who made that 3.0 DiCor motor?
Did Tata make it in house or is it based on another motor?

Jakes wants to tune a Tata... :D

But do keep us updated Jakes. Then I can give my 2c when someone talks about his Tata's performance figures

How do you tune a Tata? "Hey, tata, I tjune you ek sê........."

The Tata DiCOR engine was designed by AVL (https://www.avl.com/engine), built under license by Tata and was called the Tata Dicor 497SP. This engine was also used in their light trucks (Tata Ultra range). Rumours say it was based on a PSA bottom end, an AVL redesigned head and the Delphi injection system.

I suppose I can't complain about buying a VW if I've owned a Tata. So you say sell the Tata, get maybe R50.00 for it, and put this lofty deposit down on an Amarok and make debt, instead of just doing a remap? I can see that no logic was applied to this obvious troll, hey, Rooiman? ;-)

PSA bottom end.???
Isnt PSA the company behind the D3 and D4 crank snapping scourge?
In other words, the makers of the words worst bottom end?

I've been labeled a sheep for owning a Toyota. I could not come up with a decent answer to your question so followed a very well accepted comment. Either that or a 2nd hand Pajero, but since you already own a Jeep I don't think it would have helped.

* As a side note, and on topic. I did reach out to a varsity mate that worked at Tata, but he only knows of SAC... I would much rather take it to Gobabis Toyota for a tune than SAC*

Ja the Ford PSA AJD-V6. The issue with those engines isn't a weak crank, it's the oil pump........the crank just breaks when the main bearings seize. The main bearings seize because the oil pump is shyte.

Strangely enough, most failures on the DiCOR engine are NOT bottom end: it's the Delphi common rail system......similar to most common rail systems, when your fuel pump and injectors start over-fuelling, then you get melted and cracked pistons.
