TJ versus Patrol: help me decide

Jakes - they say it is a 4.5, but...
No TB45's (or even TB42's in ZA) came out with a bonnet hood. That is 3L-specific - for the top-mount intercooler.
So... I've got a feeling that that may be a ZD30. Further evidence of this is the madman on the "A pillar. Monitoring EGT's is not that important on the petrol motors...
A ZD30 in that model will be a hand-grenade.
There is a possibility that it was a hand-grenade, and the motor was swapped with a TB45 but unless they did ratios as well, it will not drive very lekker. If it was a swap and the job was done properly, bear in mind that the 4.5 auto is a bit of a slouch.

Further evidence of ZD30 is the "heat-switch". TB45 does not have switches there standard - and definitely not with that icon on it.
In short: looks good, but I'm not totally sold.
Edit: The Dekra report lists the fuel type as diesel. Similarly, I ran the VIN number through PartSouq, which definitely indicates it is a ZD30. In short: I still do not know why they are listing the vehicle as a 4.5 petrol. I'm pretty convinced now that it is a ZD30 - and at that age, a legitimate "hand-grenade" ZD30...

Jakes. I see the Dekra photos show it as a ZD30. When I first dug into the thing, WBC has it specced as a 4.5 petrol. Idiots.
I see it used to have a Patrol forum sticker on the back bumper. I've asked on the WA group to see if I can figure whose it was and get some background. If that model has a check engine light on, I would be very worried.

I'd love to know how this could happen. Never heard of this in over 40 years of vehicle ownership and swinging my own spanners.
Are you saying that there was sufficient vibration during normal driving to actually wear a detent or groove on the caliper arm that stopped the pad from being depressed by the pistons? Was the pad properly installed? Was it a quality pad?
Sounds like the vehicle was properly thrashed before you bought it.
There are literally thousands (if not 100,000s) of XJs and TJs still running around the USA.
Common problem on the Cherokees. I don't know if other models are affected.
I bought it with 200000km on the clock. It had a transmission problem when I bought it. It was only later that I figured that it had had a front end collision and the pinched oil cooler pipes were the reason for the transmission packing up.
I put another 100000km on it before the transmission died the 3rd time. It happened at a very bad time when I had broken my foot in an accident, so needed an automatic in a hurry. I sold it as a non runner and bought a Grand Vitara.

Manny I only asked to get a little more background.
Branded 4x4's are a dime a dozen - so if it was mostly for branding purposes - I would have suggested looking for something unique.. .
Like the Gladiator that stood in Bloem a while ago.
This would be different and draw more attention.
But if it's to be a toy as well then I guess something with better parts availability would probably be a better option.
So given his requirements - I had nothing constructive to add.

If you are willing to drop some cash
Go the patrol route .
Do a descent diesel , cummins sounds good .
Plenty power and will tow a huge trailer.
Diffs are descent as standard.
Nice custom body work and spray job .
Some deep sound system
Almost like a cusomized delivery vehicle , with a twist .
Or the jeep can run into R200k - R300k easy , wont be a tow vehicle , just a super duper toy with attitude .
LA sport had a custom built 80s series cruiser with huge tyres .
Was a looker and a nice advertisment for the company

I will only touch a 4.5 or 4.8 Patrol..
They say they make mad power out of a TD4..2. They say you need an EGT Guage.
They say EGT is not a problem. They say they travel 110km/h to save fuel.
Fact is the 4 2 TD is a Indirect pre chamber diesel engine.
If you understand the working of pre chamber diesel engines you will understand why you will always have a engine running hot and is very sensitive to EGT when modified
I will not waste a second on a TDI 2.7 or 3.0 either. Had a 3.0l TDI for a while in a Hardbody. I really cannot see it powering a much heavier Patrol. The most gutless underpowered turbo diesel I have ever driven.
Get a 4.5 or 4.8 Patrol an enjoy life. I really cannot see why you need to glue your eyes to a EGT Guage and temperature meter.

Yes - the TD42 is very sensitive to EGT's. Most of the Patrol forum folk have madman units installed as a result.
Converting a TB45 to a TD42 is also not cheap. The motors themselves are expensive and they are donkeys unless they have an after market turbo fitted. I say after market, as I do not believe any of factory standard TD42s were ever imported to ZA.
Therein lies the second issue - although there are folk who just replace the exhaust manifold and bolt an aftermarket turbo on and they run relatively well (at very low boost though), to properly turbo that motor is also expensive. Since no factory turbo motors were ever imported here, one has to also look at replacing the con-rods and pistons. Michael Steyn from Soho Automotive has got this down to an art form now and the turbo TB42s he builds make crazy power. But, as I said, it is an expensive exercise.
One can look at getting a standard TD42 patrol, but they are a lot rarer than the petrol Patrols and they are also quite a lot more expensive. You can get good deals for ZD30, TB42, TB45 and TB48 Patrols, but you're not going to get a TD42 Patrol within your proposed budget.
