I think with the OM606 you can make more power than the M57, but apparently spares could be a problem in SA.

Indeed. The OM605/606 is used extensively in engine swops for Merc Sprinter taxis. And getting somebody good to tweak the mechanical pump is a mission.
The M57 is basically a standalone ECU and mini harness, a high pressure fuel pump and it's will run.
