Tyre change: From 285/65/17 to 285/70/17, what are the risks?

#1

Post by LesseW »

Morning,

I want to change the tyres on my vehicle but the range of tyres for the spec 285/65/17 is limited. If I go with the spec 285/70/17 then the range is broad.

For the experts, what are the risks and issues on my vehicle’s mechanics (incl warranty) that I can expect? The vehicle has enough power to overcome the larger tar footprint.

Thanks for the guidance on this in advance!

In the title you imply you want to change from a 17" rim to a 16" rim.
But in the text the rim remains a 17".

While I don’t think you will have any issues, the size you are looking at is 29mm bigger diameter. That is 3%. Everyone wants to go bigger but it does depend on your intended use of the vehicle. If it is not going to be used for trails why fiddle with the tyre size. I wouldn’t. You will notice a difference. An option for you where there are many tyre make options available is 265/70/17. Almost identical diameter but a bit thinner. That’s what I would go for.

By going from a 65 profile to a 70 profile you will increase the profile by 5%of 285mm.
So the profile will go up 14.25mm (giving the 28.5mm diameter increase Andreas refers to above).
This means the vehicle will stand 14.25mm higher off the ground.
The rolling circumference will increase from 2520.50mm to 2610.04mm an increase of about 3.55%.

Bottom line: Change is minimal, speedo will be more accurate, consumption will show a mathematical improvement.

285/65/17 is the standard but tyre choices are minimal with this profile

I changed the tyres on Fearless from the standard 265/65 17" to 265/70 17".
So a greater % change.
Because I went from a road biased AT to an aggressive AT (Cooper ST Maxx) my ride height increased by a real (measured) 18mm, but this was partially due to the change from half worn Duellers to new Coopers.
I liked the more accurate readouts a d the 18mm extra helped on trails.
There were no negatives other than the massive weight increase of the thick skinned Coopers over the thin Duellers.

From the comments I read that no damage will be done to the vehicle’s mechanics. I just don’t want the vehicle’s brain/ecu to hunt for gears because the tyre profile is different.

Okay then one tyre size up will be fine, no issues. Most OEM’s allow for up to 3% difference in size. Your speedo will probably be more accurate too.

If manufacturer allows for 3% bigger sizes, you might be an edge case :
