The ... precursor to the Dakar Rally ... :

" ... In 1971, ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker used the unproven Range Rover to drive from Algeria to Lagos, Nigeria to set up a recording studio and jam with Fela Kuti. Predating the Paris-Dakar Rally the subsequent documentary is replete with such terrain, and documents the vehicle's endurance... "

... and of course Range Rovers went on to win
the Dakar in 1979 and 1980 ...

... the rest is history ...

Chas' claim makes sense.

Up until 40 years ago Land Rover was ahead of the pack.

I flew around Ghana, just above the forests, in a Huey chopper .. but not to Nigeria ... !
Not that I recall, anyway... but I know how good a drummer Ginger was !
(and Keith Moon of the WHO !
...but that's history ... )
