Return of the Troopy ???

#1

Post by Mad Manny »

Little birdie told me that TSA is considering bringing the Land Cruiser 78 ' Troopy' back.

For those who don't know, the Troopy is a 70 series Land Cruiser 'panel' van.

It came out briefly around the time the V8 d-4D was launched in SA, but it only had the 4.2 N/A motor.
Then TSA withdrew it..

If it gets relaunched, it will again only get the 4.2N/A - according to my sources...

Here's a pic...

Dis vir Mans. Opregte Mans.

I am following a few Troopy built threads. Some local and some overseas. Think it is the ultimate overlander with unlimited options.

There might be some reason why most seasoned overlanders uses a Troopy.
You will never find me without Stroh or a 4x4 :D

I don’t know why TSA refuses to bring in the V8?

I still think the Troopy is the ultimate over-lander, even with the 4.2D. Gutless, but bullet proof and will run on nearly any diesel, even the stuff diluted with paraffin.
Cut the roof off, add a lekker lift top tent, and everything else fits in the long station wagon body.
I never understood why TSA dropped it, just allow it on special order, LC7x series are all imported anyway

Everywhere where the Troopy is sold they get it in V8, so I don't understand why we'd only get it in 4.2, unless it's to dump the last stick.

Another theory is we'll get the 4.2 until the new 3.3 V6 TD arrives.

What makes the Troopy a great Overlander is its space.
The Troopy has a longer wheelbase than the 76 SW (but shorter than the 79 bakkies) and then a longer rear overhang.
The absence of rear doors makes the rear more usable...
