5 Door Jimny for India?

#1

Post by Mad Manny »

There are reports that India may produce a 5 door Jimny (Sierra).

Our two 'Jimny Whisperers' Flipside & Saxj both dispute this.

Background:
The previous Jimny (the 1300) was around for 20 years.
India never got that model.
India still runs the previous SJ called the Gypsy.

The only reason they got the Gypsy is that the Indian military buys it & that kept production going.

The Gypsy was discontinued over 2 years ago, but you can still get it on order (in India) - I assume they do limited runs as & when the military places an order.

But effectively, for the past 2 years, Indians can't buy a SJ/Gypsy/Jimny.

The Indians are crying out for the new Jimny Sierra

Maruti Suzuki
Maruti Suzuki is big & powerful.
Suzuki's sell very well in India thanks to Maruti.
Maruti sell a re-badged RAV as a Suzuki in India.
Two Suzuki's are re-badged as Toyota's there.

Suzuki cannot keep up with demand of the Jimny - this despite the fact that they pulled the Jimny from Europe & it isn't sold in North America.

Suzuki Japan & Maruti have built a factory in India to produce the Jimny - this will solve the demand issues.
The Jimny's from this factory will apparently NOT be sold in India.
Production from this factory will start soon (? September 2020)
So the poor Indians, who are desperate for the new Jimny, will make it, but can't buy it.

The rumours are that another factory will be built to supply India only.
The Jimny's in this2nd factory may be 5 door & may or may not be 4x4.

Indians have large families - a 5 seater is essential there.

Even the Gypsy was (apparently) fitted with rear side bench seats facing one another.

So let's see.

In Nam, we got the Gyspy with the optional rear bench seats. Sadly, Suzuki has opted to withdraw the Gypsy from Nam...

Is that not due to there being no production of the model anymore?

I am not sure. But it remains a pity.

A Report out of India yesterday said that all Jimny production will move to India,
Currently ALL Jimny's are produced in the one same plant in Japan.

In Indonesia the Jimny waiting list is 'theoretically' 20 years.

So the new plant in India will make ALL Jimny's for export.

Again, I believe a 2nd plant will be built by Maruti Suzuki to make the 5 door Jimny which will be badged a 'Gypsy' this 5 door will be sold in India & maybe exported too...

I assume the Japanese plant will then be used to produced other Suzuki models...

I'll believe it when I see it. Speculation and imagination don't make reality.

As the noose slowly tightens around SAXJ's neck...

"Suzuki will launch a five-door version of its Jimny off-roader as early as 2021 or 2022, with the Japanese brand working with Toyota on the new family-sized 4WD, according to new reports."

More noose tightening...

https://autojosh.com/5-door-suzuki-jimn ... the-works/

"The five-door Jimny will be co-developed by Suzuki and Toyota and will make use of the Raize compact SUV architecture. It is expected to be powered by the same 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine found in models such as the Suzuki Ertiga. Power will be sent to the rear wheels, with a selectable four-wheel-drive system on standby."

Really, now you believe a Nigerian, and an Aussie that makes shit up. There is no such thing as Suzuki India, and there is nothing on Maruti Suzuki's press releases about the photoshopped Indian dream.

"Raize compact SUV architecture"?! A Jimny has a ladder frame chassis, some monocoque framework, won't make a 5 Door Jimny.

As said before, I'll believe it when I see it.

This report seems more grounded in reality...

The reporter is definitely better and actually quotes sources, but it appears that the previous nonsensical reports are based on the GaadiWaadi article which he quotes as a source, but ~GaadiWaadi's report doesn't appear to have any factual basis either.

The first 184 Jimny 3 door models produced by Maruti Suzuki India at the Gurugram Plant have been exported (to South America).
These are the first new Jimny's to be produced outside of Japan.
ALL the Jimny's produced at Gurugram will be exported.

There is a 2nd plant in India which hasn't started production yet.
The Jimny's from this plant will be for Indian consumption.

I believe they will be 5 door & will be branded as Maruti Gypsy...

I see right hand drive ones in the press release as well , with no electronic safety stuff, which can only be destined for South Africa.

Manny also believes in the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus
