The main attraction is its auto.
If they brought out the V8 diesel in Auto the 2.8 wouldn't sell as well.
There was a conversion offered by somebody? Zone Offroad?
There's been a few such done in South Africa but at R150,000 - R250,000.
Here in Aus this is quite a popular conversion to place the 6 Speed AB60 Automatic Transmission from the 200 Series in the 70. Looking at around $20,000 - $25,000.

Now you can buy a 2.8 which in stock format has more torque than the V8. The 2.8 is cheaper, lighter on fuel and has the auto box. Now usually auto vs. manual comes down to user preference, but in this case the 5 speed manual in the V8 has a weak 5th gear and a lot of guys spend money on the manual as well. Nothing wrong with it. Cruisers are not known as value for money purchases, but I think the 2.8 makes the V8 look even more overprized.

Only the 4.2 with the R151 box had a fifth gear problem. All other Cruiser run H151 and H152 gearboxes. These are truck boxes that also do duty in Dyna trucks must be the strongest 4x4 gearbox available. You can tow in fifth gear with them as the 5th gear is on the main shaft. Manny guys do a 5th gear ratio change on them to bring down the rpm on the v8

The way the 1GD are designed makes it better for performance upgrades than many other large capacity older designs.

1. The block does not have piston liners to add structural strength.

2. Pistons do have special coating and cooling channels. Also floating pins with steel conrods.

3. Steel crank shaft. Main Bearings supported by upper and lower cases in which balancer shafts run.

4. 16 Valve double OHC with second level cooling ports to keep EGT down.

5. Trochoid gear driven two stage oil pump with extra oil squirters. Engine mounted oil cooler.

6.Intake manifold with pneumatic swirl control flaps to form a vortex controlling combustion.

7. On the ECU side two EGT sensors pre and post turbo to adjust fuel ratio to keep EGT in check.

Pretty robust design with many features only to be found in high performance engines.
Like the 1VD V8 seems it were designed with room for lots of extra horses.

Are you saying you oppose Nissan's decision to replace the 5.6liter V8 with a 3.5 V6 that produces more power & torque?

But the V6 has a turbo dummy. You can wring anything out of an engine with a few add ons, you can even get a diesel to be as good as a petrol, well…………..almost.

Not at all, but all other factors held equal (i.e. ignoring the stuff Grips listed on the 2.8 in post #22), a smaller engine I would think has less potential for upgrades than a bigger one. I have seen videos of the VK56 being supercharged in Oz, and look on the driver's face says it all. I do not think the 3.5V6 would have that same potential. But as with the 2.8 in Toyota, who knows, I may be wrong.
