Disturbing news from Toyota. They have decided to drop the V8 Diesel for the new 2.8. Thoughts? Could this be a mistake like not upgrading the new Prado's engine?

If it is not an April fool's joke, I am sure that Toyota will be able to squeeze a few extra HP from that 2.8 - which by the way is a magnificent diesel engine in its own right.

The current 2.8 produces 130kw and 450NM. With an extra turbo and some ecu remapping, they could easily tap out (or exceed) the same power and torque figures as the 2.0lt bi-turbo (Ford).

It is a brilliant motor and works well in the Fortuner and would be good in the Prado. But if you look at the out puts of the out going V8 and look at its closest rival the Discovery 4s 3lt Diesel pushed 180kw and 600nm torque and you saw what it does to its crank. And then there is the 3lt in the X5M and X6M that has 3 turbos. But it's not an off road engine.

I think it was Apocalypse that explained why a straight six is a better motor than a V6.

It was the reason why 3lt BMW motors can handle that type of torque.

Toyota should source a big straight for their cruisers.
