I subscribe, so I get 40% off.
But Leisure Wheels is R37.90 & CAR is R44.90.

But I suspect that's not the question... :D

Well hell.

Doesn’t seem like a lot of value for the R50 or so .

There is other stuff, like a visit to a private Ferrari collection in SA etc that I don't mention because it's not related to this Forum.

OK, I'll go into more detail with the June Leisure Wheels...

JUNE 2019 MAG REVIEWS

Leisure Wheels
JUNE 2019

Now in Panoramic Detail, for Apoc's benefit...

An X- BMW (not sure which of the 7 models) & an Audi (they all look the same to me) feature on the cover.

Editors Article is how we are overloaded with tech - he uses a photo of an old Beetle dash (one clock, one gauge, one stalk, no buttons) to make his point...

Lots of mention of the latest double cabs in the Letters section.

A very ugly Lexus (The LM300h - check it out) & the Tesla Electric bakkie on their FB refers page.

Voetspore - Johan asks why guys spend thousands making their 4x4's better - but seldom upgrade the brakes - Good question.

Kingsley Holgate discusses travel food - Apoc will LOVE this article.
"* Stoke the fire and with palm nut oil, fry up the last of the minced goat meat with small Kigoma onions." and so it goes...

Interview with Former Bok Captain John Smit, he talks Cape Epic & car restoration... So he is like Apoc, except he was a Bok Captain, Cycles & he restores cars... he has a Mini & a Rangie - but otherwise - he is like Apoc....

The new Ford Ranger gets a 2 page feature - the tailgate appears to be power or spring assisted...

Toyota is giving away the secrets to at least 24 000 Electric Mobility patents & allowing people to use them for FREE...

VW & Ford (the2,0 twin turbo kings) will nowe build bakkies together (obviously, it's not viable for VW to carry on building bakkies)/vE

Kahn builds a two door Defender Long Nose - the nose is long to fit the GM 6.2 litre V8. Costsas much as a Urus...

Isuzu Sa has launched a flagship D-Max 3.0 LX 4x4 Arctic 35 - R785k for an Isuzu with 35" tyres. It's 48mm higher as a result.

Something about more Audi Q2's & Q5's...?

LED Lenser hasa headlamp that can be controlled with an App - in case it's too hard to touch your forehead???

Front Runner has developed a SlimLine Roof Rack for the new Jimny - over R9k...

A article about an X3 in Nam - didn't read it.

An article about a Lesotho Photo trip...

An article about why we should give Haval of China a break - Check the Haval F7 - it's a Jag F Type rip off...
THAT's why we don't trust them!!!

Then a multi-page article on the Richtersveld. They took an Isuzu (clever guys)
They did: Springbok Lodge - Port Nolloth - Alexander Bay - Sendlingsdrift - Tatasberg - Domorogh Pass...

Some Audi article.

The Hyundai Kona gets a Test. 1.0TGi, 998cc, 88kW & 172Nm...

Test - Porsche Macan

A Station Wagon guide ???

The consumer gaming stuff, Photography & then a Lekker Kamplekker review of Noukrans Bushcamp. No power.
It's near Heidelburg in the Western Cape - Maybe Mike Nel can go - no power means no noise - so he'll be happy.

Long Term Test Reports:
Duster 6.3l/100km ave ( I can't see which Duster it is).
RAV4 2.0GX -9.1 l/100km average

ANOTHER Haval sponsored Article about vehicle design?
They don't design, they copy...

Finally, the Toyota Mega Cruiser of 1996 - basically a Toyota Hummer.
4.1 litreTurbo Diesel, 110kW & 362Nm.

Happy with the increase detail Apoc?

He is referring to the Heidelberg WC camp site mentioned in the LW review.
It's about 3 hours from his house.
So only for a long weekend...

They've dragged that old Mega Cruiser out of storage somewhere and have been running it around for a couple of months now.

We had it for a day when I was with a Toyota motorsport team 20 odd years ago - was pretty cool, but just somehow lacks the presence of a Hummer H1

John Smit is a very nice guy, and as such , is very unlike Apoc.

R50 for that lot seems too much....

JULY 2019 MAG REVIEWS

CAR Magazine
July 2019

The Real Ford Ranger Raptor in full flight on the cover.

This is a good issue!

BTW: Those opinionated Cape Based arm chair enthusiasts (you know who you are)will need to explain how, if Toyota buys off all motoring magazines as they claim, Ford gets 3 rangers tested & Hilux doesn't win a single match up???

Insight:
Preview of the next Audi A4 - it will come with 6 engines & mild hybrid.
The S4 will be diesel - Diesel is the future.

They've made a Cayenne Coupe (2 doors)

Ferrari won Engine of the year - for the 4th year running!

Golf was the first production vehicle with a dual Clutch transmission.

Drive:
The Merc EQC - All electric SUV 380kW 750Nm 355km range

Some or other Porsche & an Alpine get driven too...

The new CLS - looks like an A Class Coupe, but it's 4 door & costs R1,5bar.

Feature:
Ferrari's

Then the TESTS:
First two: Ford Ranger SiT Wildtrak & Ford Ranger BiT Raptor tested.
They have the same engine & as it is lighter, the Wildtrak is marginally faster.
But that Raptor is worth the R100k premium. For the R100k you get:
* Rear Coils
* Rear Discs
* Wider Tracks (150mm)
* A higher stance (46mm)
* Smaller wheels with bigger tyres giving much higher sidewalls.
* Fox suspension with much longer travel

CAR rates the V6 Amarok Extreme, at R818k, better than the R788k Raptor. The Mercvara Xerox Class comes 3rd.
I think I'd rather go Raptor - but the Amarok will be better rounded...

They then compare the Wildtrak to the competition: 1st is the Wildtrak, then the Hilux 2.8 & 3rd the Navara.

Not a good day for the Mercvara twins.

Next test: Audi Q8 55 TSFi Quattro - R1.4 bar. CAR says rather buy a Ranger Rover Sport.

Then the 4th test is of the BMW z4 M40i - they say rather buy a Boxster

The 5th & 6th tests are a comparison of the new Triton & the Ranger XLT.
Ranger scores 77 & the Triton 76. It's that close.

So, THREE Rangers tested; Raptor, Wildtrak & XLT - I think FORD is paying off CAR Mag :?

The 7th test is a Suzuki Ciaz 1.5 - bland piece 'O Crap - in the matchup CAR suggests the Toyota Quest rather - I agree.

The 8th test is the BMW 330i with 190kW and 400Nm - not bad for a 2.0i Turbo Petrol.

The 9th test is of the RAV4 2.0GX-R - this is the pick of the RAV range. They previously tested the 2.5 VX - but the 2.0 GX-R will be the volume seller.
In the matchup they say RAV 1st, then the Subaru & 3rd the X-Trail. - Can't argue.

In Tech Talk there is talk of an Electric Dakar.

Then there is an article on Power & Torque I haven't read it - but I will do so & report back on Apoc's Power & Torque Thread.

The Classic buy article this month is on the Valiant of 1970 - 1977. 3.7 liter 6 with less than 110kW...

This issue is definitely worth buying...

Here goes...

Four cars on cover, main one is a red (what else) Ferrari.

Feature on the 1970 Aston DB6 Mk2Vantage - 4.0 6cyl with 210kW - not bad for 50 years ago...

THEN!!!!
TESTS:
Comparative Test Amarok V6 4-Motion Highline vs Merc X-Class 350d 4Matic 7G Tronic
I am happy to announce.....

....the VW cleans the Merc's Clocks.
As CAR says "The Amarok is Cheaper, more Enjoyable & more Practical.
The Merc is too Flawed & too Expensive...

Test of the Mazda3 2.0 Astina - they say its close to Golf class.
1. Audi A3 Sportback, 2. Merc A200 3rd Mazda3

Test of the Mahindra XUV300 Diesel.
They say its very good - BUT it costs more than it's competitors???
1. Ford EcoSport 1.5 TDci 2. Renault Captur 3rd The Mahindra XUV300

Test of the Volvo XC40 Ts FWD
1. Tiguan 2.0TDi 2. Volvo XC40 3rd BMW X1

Test of the BMW Z4 2.0i - R750k
1. Porsche Boxster 2. the Z4 3rd Merc SLC

Test of the Corsa GSi, too pricey
1. Mini Cooper 2. Abarth 595 3rd the Corsa

Brief Long Term test of the Corolla 1.2T - used 7.3l/100km

TECH:
Airless Tyres coming next year
ZF mid Mounted Electric Motor for trucks
