A Spiraling Conundrum...

A few years back (? 2012) Toyota issued a recall on the Fortuner D-4D for some airbag issue.
I wasn't sure if Fearless was affected, but I was told by other owners that I'd be contacted by TSA if it was.
Then, sometime later, I saw on the myToyota App that I had a recall.
I called Halfway Toyota NorthGate - they said I must stress it will be done at the next service.

A few months later Fearless was due for a service & I booked it in & asked them to do the recall - no problem.
When I collected the vehicle I asked if they did the airbag recall & the guy said no they were out of parts.
But he said it wasn't an issue, when the parts arrived they'd call me to bring it in - it takes less than an hour.

I later read on a 4x4 Forum that the recal had something to do with something called a Spiral Cable, but I didn't know what that was.

I forgot all about it, but a few weeks later the Customer Service lady called for Feedback _ I said all was good, except the recall.
She said she'd call me back - clearly no Toyota phones can make outgoing calls - she also never came back to me.

Months later I was due for another service. I called to book it in, the guy wanted my VIN, I said I don't have it.
He asked for my registration. I gave it to him, he hit the keyboard & said "Is this for the 70000km service?"
It was. Clearly he found me on the system. He asked if there was anything else, I said no, he then said "So its the service & the recall - I see it hasn't been done."
I said "Oh yes, they were supposed to do it last time." He assured me it was no issue.
On collecting I asked if the recall was done - the guy said no, you have no recall, you don't need one, your vehicle is not affected.
I was a bit confused, but thought that's great & got on with my life.

Now it's 2 or 3 years later, and I noticed my hooter doesn't always work. Finally someone says it's the Spiral Cable.
I then learn (from owners) that the recall was to replace the Spiral Cable.

I pop into Halfway Toyota NorthGate to ask what the situation is. The very helpful guys there tell me:
* No recall ever on Fearless.
* Spiral Cable had nothing to do with the recall whatsoever.
* They can replace my Spiral Cable, R7 044.00 - but he'll do it for R6 500.00.

The Spiral Cable runs from the steering down the steering column - it controls everything on the steering wheel;
* Remote buttons (which I never use - my arms are long enough to reach the dash).
* The hooter
* The airbag.
* Maybe the Cruiser Control.
All those things, except the Tooter, work...?

Now my questions;
1. Was the Spiral Cable part of the recall?
2. How come I was/wasn't/was/wasn't part of the recall?
3. Is there any way of getting this done for less that R6500 - that's a chunk o' change...

I've only got 115 000km & now I'm facing these massive issues (No Hooter) - I would have bought a lesser brand if I wanted hassles... :D :lol: :)

I did ask Russell Venter of Secunda Toyota for advice - he suggested I buy an Isuzu MU-X.

He was obviously joking! :lol:

I'm so confused now. My Tuner went in for Diff seals and bearing repairs three weeks ago at Toyota in Alberton. When I picked the vehicle up they also told me that the spiral cable and something else that's got to do with the airbag needs to be replaced. They will call me when the parts arrive and there's no charge. My Tuner is a 2006 V6 petrol with 190 000 k's. My question to our very competent best vehicle on the market no1 dealers is how come it was only picked up now?

My 2008 Fortuner D-4D got recalled on 2 separate occasions, 1 for the Spiral Cable and 1 for the Airbag.

At the 110,000km service in October 2014 they had no stock of the spiral cable so it was only replaced at the next service.
The Spiral Cable was replaced in September 2015 at the 120,000km service.
The Airbag was replaced March 2016 at the 130,000km service.

Can you not find record of the 60 000kms and 70 000kms job cards/invoices where they possibly mention the spiral cable replacement?

If you had it on an official Toyota document then you can try fight them saying you never had parts...

Ge'Off - the salesman checked the entire service history - no mention of it.
It also disappeared off my myToyota App.

My belief is I DID have a recall, but due to ad admin error it was reset or cancelled.

I have no issue with a glitch - I have a major issue if I have to spend R7k on something that Toyota should have done...

100% behind you, it's a lot of moolah to pay for a recalled item.

I just spoke to my mate, drives a 2011 3.0 D4D 4x4, he had the same issue, Toyota wanted lots to replace the spiral cable, he says go to the spares counter and ask there, they know about it and they can supply you just the 1 part that dies for about R2700, the trick is you will need to fit it yourself.

Manny, if you get the part, I'll help you fit it. I've done a few patrol clock springs.

There was a recall....because yours got left behind, you lost out.
Maybe they deemed all recalls to have been done.

You need to moan harder.....

Thanks Anthony - 90% of the cost is the Spiral Cable,
The labour is only 0.8 hours.

Prof, yes, but it's not my error.

My next move is to call TSA Technical & ask if my VIN # was ever on a recall list.

Manny is mistaken. This cannot possibly be his Toyota, as they never break down or have any issues.

he's probably confused in his old age and is talking about his old colt.

And it's called the 'clock spring' - not a spiral cable.

it doesn't run down the column, it looks a lot like an old clock spring - hence the name - and as you turn one way it coils a little tighter, and the other way a little looser to keep all the buttons and airbag connected and powered.

usually looks something like that ⬆️

In fact, every one I've seen looks the same other than plugs - which kind of makes me think they are all made by one company.

the Jeep's one was also replaced under a recall - but it costs R1800, apparently only sheeple are fleeced by the Nippons....
