Garmin Routing and Navigation

So I recently did a Garmin course to improve my way through the woods .
I have a Nuvi 67 (circa R2500 these days ?).
I found it is way less capable than the Montanas and 276s etc (+R9000 !) that the serious folk had ... I can not interchange Tracklog data sets with BaseCamp etc so its fine for everyday existing road and route networks say off T4A etc
but not much good for remote offroad bush trails etc ... eg in a few weeks time I’m doing a different 150km on sand River Trip along the Oliphants R. from Makopane.
What do you guys use , what have you learnt ...
and whats essential or un-necessary etc
Is it worth upgrading?
Is BaseCamp or equiv essential for effective planning ?
