Don't tell me it doesn't. You would be wrong if you think it didn't matter

Everyone sells a car sooner or later, i don't know anyone with 10 cars parked that they "just never sold"

It matters to 100% of people.
Ok hang on. Let me rather say. "It matters to anybody who privately owns a vehicle"

My sons 1997 Corsa is effective reliable transport but its probably worth less than 10-15k ... hardly worth fixing , tinkering etc and not a lot of point selling it or trading it in and no one steals it ...
...he’ll crash a new one or it will get stolen.
Resale value mainly relevant to those who buy new and resell near end of warranty etc
ie people who lose a lot of money on cars over a lifetime.... unless company car schemes etc
My 2003 130 Defender on the other hand
... I have to put a gorilla bar on when I nip into
a cafe ... and is battlescarred, has charisma
even at 1/2-life stage ...
Old soldiers never die ... just fade away.

I understand Neil's argument - it is subjective and therefore not a consideration to all vehicle owners.
The same argument applies to buying new vs second hand. Some argue that if you buy new, reliability is that much better and you can get a decent price if you sell it at the right time. The flipside will argue that they will rather let the new owner take the depreciation knock. Its subjective.
I am one of those that believe in buying new and selling three or four years down the line. The moment that becomes my approach to buying cars, resale value will play a huge role and I will be limited to buying vehicles which holds value well for three to four years.
If I buy 2nd hand - purely as a weekend toy - resale value will mean f. all to me. The purpose of the vehicle is then limited and I am not driven by the economic factors as much as the joy I derive from the vehicle.

:... lets say you buy a mid-range suv for R600k...
as you leave the showroom its value goes down by R90k to R510k .. its then going to fall by 10 to 15% each year thereon AND you going to pay comprehensive insurance on a 1/2-bar car ... and your updated replacement model after 3 or 4 years will cost a lot more, maybe 25 % more, new price on new price...
but if company car scheme can take some of that pain can be worth it ...
... so yes if you going to recycle new car after
3 or 4 yrs , you need look after it.
Many guys with well kept cars avoid taking their cars off-road ...
... eg some arnt doing Baboons next month !

I know several people like that.
The everyday drive just gets traded in and it's 'whatever' but the toys get left in the shed.
Resale value only matters if you took bad finance with a massive balloon payment that means you are married to the shoebox for a decade or so....

https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog ... d-hoardingHoarding is considered an offshoot of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), but recently this categorization is being reevaluated. It’s estimated that about one in four people with OCD also are compulsive hoarders. It is possible that some time in the future hoarding will become its own distinct category. In the meantime, it’s very real, and more and more people are opening up about the difficulty hoarding presents in their lives.
Without exception, hoarding is always accompanied by varying levels of anxiety and sometime develops alongside other mental illnesses such as dementia and schizophrenia. Recent neuroimaging reveals peculiar commonalities among hoarders including severe emotional attachment to inanimate objects and extreme anxiety when making decisions.
Hoarding both relieves anxiety and produces it. The more hoarders accumulate, the more insulated they feel from the world and its dangers. Of course, the more they accumulate, the more isolated they become from the world, including family and friends. Even the thought of discarding or cleaning out hoarded items produces extreme feelings of panic and discomfort.

THANK GOD there are people who don't care a damn about resale value - if it weren't for them BMW would never have sold a single X5 & Merc would never have sold a single ML/GLE...
