4x4 Action Group

If you were to modify your 4x4 to be both good at over landing as well as trail busting what are the most important mods you would add? I have seen guys go crazy with aftermarket bumpers and winches, drawer systems, built in compressors but are all of these necessary? Thoughts?

If you had asked for a list of important options in order of priority then my response would have been longer [emoji1787]

So please send me your list. I did ask for mods not mod. That implies plural.

Wow, depends on how hectic your trail riding is going to be. A good trail rig is not going to be a good overlander. Unless you talking of little trails like DeWildt.

Trails orientated mods:
Bigger chunkier rubber is always a good start.
A lift and longer travel suspension for SFA. With IFS you are very limited in this department.
SO, you could even look at a SFA conversion[emoji16]
Under body protection
Get rid of plastic bumpers and trim that can litter trails.
Rock sliders.
Winch.
Crawler gears.

Overlanding:
Good rubber (could be same as trail riding)
Spare wheel (second one)
Long range fuel tank or Jerry can carriers
Water tank could be handy
Drawer setup helps keep things organised and from becoming missiles inside the car in case of a roll over.
Modcons you think you can't do without while you are in the bush. Could range from gas stove/oven to a shower, or even a tv with DSTV dish and decoder.

The bank and your imagination is your limiting factors. You really need to go play and decide what and where you are lacking. Some items I mentioned are probably way over the top for 99% of guys, and anything more badass could become a trailer queen. BUT you will never have a vehicle that is perfect for higher grade trails and overlanding. As the vehicle gets better in the one use, it becomes more impractical for the other.

Thanks David. I have concerns around weights well. A winch is great if you are stuck on your own but is it better than a strap if saving weight.

I have done the full circle. Have build several 4x4`s. The Yank Ranger could do serious off-roading. I have attended several 4x4 trips 600km away. I have towed my Caravan on holidays like 1400km out and back. I have towed loads up to 4 tons. You can have a all round 4x4 in one package. Did I mention its 500mm wheel travel and 35 inch tyres. Yes it also a V8 close to 300kw.

Thing is how serious you want to 4x4.

Currently looking to do a few mods on the 76 Cruiser. My plans include fitting 35`s. Do not want to disturb the nice ride of the current suspension. Maybe a spacer lift. With its double lockers I am sure with 35`s fitted it will not be far from the Rangers Off- road ability.
Why the mods on the 76. You can make it quite capable in most 4x4 conditions excluding sand.

If you want to do overlanding just slab on stock tyres and go.

One must be very careful not to ruin a perfect off-road 4x4 with ridiculous mods that you seldom use.
I do exclude trail rated vehicles that is able to do Carnage Canyon.

But once you see Flipside and others in action with his Jimmy you might sit back and give the whole mod thing a second thought.

Dammit did I mention that I would love a shorty Cruiser with a LS Chevy v8

Did I mention a reliable 4x4 for those far off trips

I wise man (can’t remember his name) once told me to start at ground level and work your way up:

Tyres
Suspension
Rock sliders
Diff and gearbox protection
Bumper
Snorkel

You can go on

What was important for me in all my alterations was:

Tyres
Suspension
Dual battery
