4X4 Tyres
Hi guys. Im due for a new set of tyres for my Tuna. Would like to hear what tyres work better than others for you. It will be used as a daily driver but also for 4x4ing. At the moment I am looking at Cooper STMaxx or Mickey Thompson ATZ P3. What would you suggest for rock and sand.

Tough one.
For rock the Coopers will work very well but in sand their sidewalls don’t flex enough.
Also look at the Michelin LTX2 or the Pirelli Scorpion ATR+.
Unfortunately I don’t know Mickey Thompson’s at all.

Flex is overrated

I have fitted the new Goodyear Adventure tyres to the Disco. I'm not big into the more hectic 4x4 side but have been very impressed with the performance of the Goodyear's on the Mountain passes trip and the River Trip last year. Traction in the river sand and on wet rocks was good in the river. They seem to handle muddy conditions like we had a few weeks ago near Harties. In my opinion they are a good all round A/T tyre.

The mickeys and cooper seems to be very the same tyre, as they are made by cooper.

Its always a difficult choice, I like the 3 ply sidewalls for our gravel roads, seems to hold up much better than 2 plys. As I live on a farm and daily drives on gravel it seems to be a natural choice to choose a 3 ply tyre. My question is: have any of you done some sand and dune driving in say a STMaxx or simular tyre and what was the outcome. Maybe Manny can jump in here as he uses StMaxx.

Most AT tyres run at a deficit in sand mainly due to their tendency to have smaller gaps between the treads. Especially the likes of the Scorpions or Wranglers.
For this reason the STMaxx is a very good sand tyre as well as the Mickey Thompson AT tyres. Sidewalls work just fine.

Xj any idea whats the lowest safe pressure for ST Maxx and Mickeys before debeating. Yes I know its a new can of worms but I have run St Maxx on my hilux at .8 bar without any problem, but that is a 2x4 and only did it get up a sand dune to get out of river bed.

Pine all I am going to say is that Mickey Thompson is not the best tyre for the type of dirt roads you guys drive. Also you do not use the term rock and sand for tyres in the same sentence.
You will never find me without Stroh or a 4x4

There’s no definite point where a tyre will debead - too many variables, unless you have BFG tyres. Debeads mostly happen whilst turning. But there’s guys that run aggressively with 0,5 with ST MaxxPine wrote:Xj any idea whats the lowest safe pressure for ST Maxx and Mickeys before debeating. I am happy with my Cooper ST Maxx tyres.
But they have become very expensive...

I have happily run my StMaxx at 0.6 bar in sand without issues. But then again I try not to turn to aggressively.
Most recently I had my AT3’s at 0.4 bar at Atlantis, also without issues
