A mate go stuck the other evening in a very unfortunate incident where the body of his vehicle got stuck against a rock.

This particular corner is very tricky to negotiate because it’s on an incline in soft sand, which is also offcamber.

So the potential to slide downwards towards the rocks is very high, especially in a LWB.

We jacked the rock away from the body as much as possible, before doing the recovery.

In this instance, where would you have attached the recovery strap? Left or right hand side shackles on each vehicle, in order to prevent it from pivoting back against the rock?

Would have used a bridal strap and connected it on both sides

I think that would cause the strap end to take the path of least resistance by sliding to one side of the bridal (if that makes sense)

But you would still have the pulling force on both sides and not just on the one side

Having enough force wasn’t an issue. Easy pull. It was about not pulling it back into the rock.

Was it possible to have an anchor car at the back left to hold the back end while you pulled from the front?

I would have recovered it backwards, towards the left of the stuck vehicle. Turning the steering wheel right would keep the front away from the rocks

Difficult to judge a situation if not on site. Also depends on equipment available. If not in contact with the rock a good old Hi-lift push over will clear it. 4X4 with winch side pull to clear the rock if not dug in.

If every thing else fails a hammer. Just moer in the body panels touching the rock and recover.

It actually would have been even better to winch the back away from the rock. But it would have been a long drive around to that position. Plus the vehicle would have had to go well out of the tracks, which we wanted to avoid.

But your idea would have had merit

Wouldn’t have worked. It’s off camber. Plus there’s another rock behind that one.

So eventually, after the rock was jacked away from the body, the strap was halved to make the pivot less & attached at the left outer shackle points on both vehicles.

Then the Triton being recovered steered upwards
