Knife Sharpening.

#1

Post by Chris Stoffel »

It is not always easy to sharpen a knife properly. So I was wondering what you guys use to sharpen your knives?

I have always used an oil stone. Mine was broken in halve but it worked OK. During the past week I was lucky enough to obtain some very nice stones, second hand but hardly used. One stone is a Pike/Norton India Fine combination stone and the other a Norton India stone, not as fine as the first one.
I still need a leather strop though.
I have tested a Lansky sharpener once and did not like it.

So, what do you you guys use, and what oil do you use?

Why not use a belt grinder with a fine tape as on forge in fire programed. Maybe a diamond grinding wheel

Because I don't have stuff like that.

I use a butchers sharpening steel.
I find that it works better, faster and is less tedious than oilstones and strops.

But that is maybe because I don't use my knives to shave with... :)

Most of my best sharps are carbon steel so a file works wonders. So too does a rock. SS is a pain...

Hi Jean

I find that Lansky set a bit time consuming. But I have heard good things about the Lansky.

]The Lansky kit, the Spiderco sharpening gear as well as a warthog sharpener and a couple of good old whetstones went in the fire.

So I got this.

it's brilliant,
