I need some ideas please...

Bought a 1996 Disco 1 V8i ES model.

New waterpump, new viscous fan, new thermostat, recon radiator.

Then I read on a WhatsApp group about the aircon fans that are supposed to come on at slow speeds (LR or traffic) to assist the viscous.

Now, I tested the fans by getting the vehicle to operating temp and switching on the aircon.

Fans stay off.

Could that be the reason why the Landy overheats in LR and traffic?

But those Buick V8s don’t like the heat even with them ...

I have connected the auxiliary fan, that is usually controlled by an electronic variable speed relay on the Jeep, to the headlight circuit using a normal high Amp relay. When my headlights are on, the fan runs at full blast - finish and klaar. I drive with the headlights on 24/7, so it works fine for me. An added bonus is that I can switch the electric fan OFF when I need to - like when driving through deep water.

If you replace the fan relay(s), just make sure you get high Amp rated relays. The fan draws serious current and a 40Amp relay lasted about 30 minutes before it was fried.

In my Series after I put in a new fan had 3 switches in 1. All were straight in and out i.e 3 different circuits.

The power to the thermostat went into the top 2.
Top was power straight to the fan.
Middle was power to the thermostat.
Bottom no power, for water crossings.

I am not sure od the operating temp of the Rover v8. All my electric fans are controlled by thermo switches installed in the radiator return line to the engine. I found switches from VW available in different ranges.

The v6 Ford Courier I once owned also had a fan setup like on the Disco with the aircon fan assisting in severe conditions. Best will be to find the fault on the current electric fan. It should ave a thermo switch and relays. If the aircon does not activate it the it could be a relay at fault.

Oppies, did you ever check the actual temperatures?

That small movement on the guage is usually a couple of degrees.

I did not.

Mine goes from 1/4 to 3/4.

It should kick in. My D1 v8 used to kick in except when the VF failed and shed the oil. Thats the only time it didnt

Well, the connections did not make proper contact. Sprayed contact cleaner into it.

Rewired the fans to run of a switch inside the cabin and now they run from start up
