4x4 Accidents!
I was watching Youtube saw this video, we shared it before. we need to learn from it, it happens when inexperienced people take the role of navigator or when people that are over confident and act with stupidity or inexperience. Maybe I am harsh but accidents are for real, your thoughts?

The nav is extremely important. This guy just seemed to walk away at the crucial moment?Martin de Jager wrote:I was watching Youtube saw this video, we shared it before. we need to learn from it, it happens when inexperienced people take the roll of navigator or when people that is over confident and act in stupidity or inexperience. I blame him more than the driver, but the driver sits on the left, then he drives up against the natural contours, also spells disaster,

Look, the navigator was totally useless.
But the roll over was not his fault.
He was waving his arms around so it was anyone's guess what he wanted the driver to do.
At the time of the roll over the Navi was no longer giving the line.
The obstacle looks way more difficult than that driver was good for.
The video doesn't show how steep that hill was.
But you could see from the way people were bracing that it is steeper than it looks.
The SWB Jeep is very unstable... if it was an unlimited 4 door he would have been OK.
If it was a Fortuner he would have been OK.

Seems like the Swaybar was not disconnected, in the 2dr it makes a massive diffrance. And golden rule i follow is that if i can not see my Navigator then i don't move. Not an inch... and no one navigates from the side only the front. If this guy turned the steering to his left 5 cm would have made a difference. He was on the right line then turned off it

The spotter was pointing to the right of the vehicle repeatedly before he disappeared, which is the way the driver turned incorrectly. It is not clear if he was pointing out the hazard, or was directing the driver to turn that way. Signals need to be clear and consistent.
The swb JK has a wheelbase of 2420 mm - only 325mm (slightly more than a ruler length) less than a 'Tuna (2745mm) and it's track is wider and it is lower than a Fortuner, BTWThe SWB Jeep is very unstable... if it was an unlimited 4 door he would have been OK.
If it was a Fortuner he would have been OK.

Why do drivers do their utmost to avoid rocks and ruts and holes on a obstacle? We have rock sliders and flex but do not use them. That driver should have stopped weaving between rocks and ruts and taken a more straight line. I wonder if the driver walked and planned the obstacle? One cannot rely on a spotter alone, one should know what the spotter is guiding you around and stuff like that.
Useless spotter. Driver also below par.
It would be interesting going up that hill.

As most have comment on the wrongs in this video which is what it is about. I will let go with something positive.
One thing we can learn from this video is the value of an good roll cage. Roll cages, proper racing type seats and a full 4 or 5 point harness goes hand in hand. If only he ad a proper seat with harness .

I’m not a fan of spotters, especially when they self nominate themselves. I’d only use one if I knew & trusted the guy & if the obstacle need one. Very distracting. That one was clueless.
But as mentioned, the driver turned up instead of down. Then he snatched the brake.

Depending on the drivers skill level the spotter can be invaluable. On the river trip Flip and some of the other experienced guys got me through and over section I didn't think possible.XJ Junkie wrote: ↑Mon Oct 08, 2018 4:41 pmI’m not a fan of spotters, especially when they self nominate themselves. I agree with the above.
Some people find it strange when I prefer SueAnne over them, but then she has been spotting for me and driving off road for over 10 years. I tell her where I want my wheels, and she makes sure that that where they are.
As for the driver, it looks like he was not up to the challenge, but then again the hand signals from the spotter were useless.

What a waste of a TJ rubicon.
The cage held up very well though.

Sometimes a lightbar is mounted too high to show you where the water is... especially if the lightbar is hampered by the fact it's daytime...

Spotters are like any other relationship...... It takes time and effort to develop the trust and understanding necessary to make it work.
