Building a Project vehicle

#1

Post by Mike Nel »

If you had the time, the know how, parts available in SA and a budget of around R200K (otherwise we would get some unreal answers), what would you like to build as a project vehicle for 4x4ing that would be really capable off road as well as a reasonably comfortable drive on tar?

Looking forward to the answers

Does the R200k include the purchase price of the vehicle?

Hmm, tough one.

Let’s make it R300K and you must buy a vehicle for that money as well

I would buy a slightly older model of my SWB Pajero, buy the right tyres, put in a 40mm lift and install a bashplate.

Job done

Disco 1 or 2 . You get them for a good price . Lift , lockers , 35 inch tyres , You will have a AWESOME toy . Might be able to do it all for R200k ??! Can even fit a decent american V8 !

V8 WJ Jeep with longarm lift (6 inches) tyres and a set of Rubicon axles (for the lockers and slightly wider track)

Unlimited funds - the same Jeep on some bolt on portals ........................
I refuse to be POLITICALLY CORRECT to impress others - Deal with it

Mike I have owned deep into the 20th 4x4`s. As anyone know by now I am a Ford fanatic. Ok that is the past models. F150 Raptor any time. :D

With my little experience in 4x4`s onething stands above all, Dealer networks. Once you move into the Platteland or Cross border this becomes critical. With my Yank Ranger had to drive 480km back and fourth at last years Whoopa to source a wheel bearing. In the end my personal choice would be between a Patrol 4.8 or 80 and 100 series Cruisers. I have owned a few G60 Patrols and even the current range proof problematic in sourcing spares in remote places.

As much as I love Patrols the Nissan dealer network is a far cry from what you get from Toyota. But then if you are willing to build a 4x4 toy that you can tow along anything goes.
You will never find me without Stroh or a 4x4 :D

Some interesting choices already mentioned.

I can think of 3 possibilities. Here is 1:

Jeep Wrangler TJ Sahara. 5 speed, not the 6 speed.

- they can be found for sub- R100k
- Pull the 4.0L motor & stroke it to 4.6L
- Sprintex self-contained Supercharger (optional: can be fitted later due to budget)
- BDS 4 inch lift, with Fox bypass shocks on the front.
- Full BDS control arms front & rear.
- 33 inch tyres
- AE beadlocked rims
- Dynatrac D44 axles front & back, or beefed up local equivalent. Both with Maniac brace system
- Novak transfer case
- ARB airlockers front & rear
- Metalcloak fenders
- Maniac stubbies
- Roll cage

I think I’m over budget

Toyota Hilux SFA single cab, bak made shorter.

Lexus v8
33" tyres
ARB lockers front and rear
Crawl gears

I'm well within budget and lots of R for fuel

105 GX 4.5 EFI Cruiser Between R130 and R160k

4.5 EFI 158KW 373NM the unbreakable engine.

H151 5-speed Gearbox in the class of a NP 435

Comes with front and rear lockers as standard

With a very mild lift 35`s fit into the wheel arches.

You can do a LS1 V8 conversion for around R80k.

Patrol 4.8 all the right goodies minus front locker. Patrol can handle serious power through its drive train with no up grades. Saw a 700HP 800NM 427 race build v8 in action. Still the hottest 4x4 I have seen in action
