It was at Carnage earlier this year.

Johan Maree is G-Wagon is he not ? This is a Johann, but I am not sure of his surname. It came through on the Patrol WA group.

There may be more than one Johan Maree, the one I know may have two N's.
That is a nice toy rig though. 37"s, crawler gear and twin locked.
It is a warning that Patrols are not as safe as I thought they were (this used to be mostly a Toy & Ford menace).

This vehicle is Johann with two N's. So I guess we are speaking of the same person / truck then.

There have been one or two Patrol incidents that I am aware of - over the last several years. So probably still a better bet than Toy / Ford. But still - it concerns me a little.

I'd rather have a Toyota that gets stolen every 5 years than drive a Nissan...

I'll defer to your superior insight into reamed out bums, Jake's....

Might be a thread on its own, but what makes a vehicle more prone to be stolen to others. Obviously a bakkie is a workshorse and money can be made.. But why steal a Fortuner/Prado/Everest instead of a Patrol?

Better built quality? Spares availability? Interchangeable spares? Would it then not be fair to assume that most stolen vehicles are the best vehicles to purchase?

I think a mistake was made. Maybe a novice thief or perhaps just an absolute nut. Who would steal a Patrol. He has probably realised his error by now and abandoned the Patrol next to the road somewhere.

Stolen under contract. Usually for a panel beater or backyard repair shop. Some go over the borders. So somebody needed a Patrol for spares.

Mostly interchangeability of spares,
If many thousands of a vehicle are on the road. The demand for engine parts, suspensions. Body panels etc. escalates accordingly.

Fortuners/ Hilux used to be based on the same chassis as taxis. So lots of shared components except body panels. For those they stole other taxis.

Notwithstanding reamed out bums, it is not only the actual theft every five years, but the concern of theft, and precautions required to avoid theft that you have to live with on a daily basis.
Personally I prefer the peace of mind that my vehicle does not share parts with millions of other vehicles on the road, but each to his own.
